Pier-Olivier Cote to face Ali Chebah at the Montreal Bell Centre on November 3rd

Boucherville, Tuesday, July 31st 2012 – After weeks of negotiations, InterBox finally came to terms with Team Ali Chebah thereby avoiding an IBF purse bid called for next week. IBF Intercontinental 140-pound champion Pier-Olivier « Apou » Cote (19-0-0, 13 KO) will face Ali « The Angel » Chebah (33-2-0, 26 KO) on Saturday, November 3rd at the Montreal Bell Centre. This much anticipated matchup will take place on the undercard of the Boxing Gala featuring Lucian Bute vs. undefeated Denis Grachev.

“Ali Chebah is well known here in Montreal. Our goal is to offer Cote solid opponents capable of progressing him up the World ranks. The IBF appointed Ali Chebah as Cote’s mandatory and we accepted and got the deal done. This will surely be an excellent fight and a big test for Cote” states InterBox President Jean Bedard.

Cote looks to me like the real thing, but they're certainly not putting him easy with the more experienced Chebah. But what the hell title is this for? It can't be an Interim or regular IBF belt as Cote is currently ranked 11th in the IBF ratings. Without bothering to research any further, I'm going to assume it's some stupid regional belt that exists simply to rob sanctioning fees from Cote and Chebah. This is a good fight, but the hardware at stake hardly adds to the interest.

Sorry to kind of deviate from this thread, I ain't at all familiar with the fighters mentioned, but I wanted to just touch on a point that Murph brought up about the titles at stake.

Say a match gets made by two contenders ranked by a body, in this case the IBF. How does it get sanctioned to be for one of those shitty made up belts? Do the promoters ask the gov body to consider the bout to be worthy of fighting for the pointless straps in the hope it will shoot their fighter up the ranks in future. Or maybe the promoter thinks that having some form of "title" associated with their fighter might attract more fans to watch them?

Or could it be the other way round, the gov bodies racketeering the boxer/promoter. The gov body says to the promoter "we want to offer our title to the winner of this fight, and of course we need our fee"....with an underlying tone of "if you don't give us the fee to sanction this fight for our shitty belt, we won't rank your fighter for the full title in future"...thus holding them to ransom somewhat?

Just a thought for folks to ponder, or indeed offer an actual answer....

Ton-

That's a great question, and I suspect that it's no cut-and-dry answer. Most of the time I imagine that it's the Org that initiates contact and sets the payoff in motion, but in moving a fighter along, I bet there's also the occasion when the management goes to the Org and inquires about fighting for a specific belt.......or if they're willing to pay enough money, to have the Org just create one out of the blue grin//
