John wants 50 and out

Recommended Posts

Unbeaten world featherweight champion Chris John has got one eye on retirement.

The 32-year-old from Indonesia, who has held a version for the 9st crown since 2003, plans on taking his winning run to 50 fights and then hanging up his gloves.

His has a title defence pencilled in against Thailand's Chonlatarn Piriyapinyo in Singapore on September 29 and expects to fight twice more in 2013 before walking away.

Sampson Lewkowicz, John's adviser, told ESPN: "Chris John will reach the 50th win and then have his retirement. We have three fights to go.

"He will have this fight in Singapore and maybe another in Singapore and then, most likely, he will have the last fight in Indonesia by the end of next year."

John has made 16 world title defences in his long career and has beaten the likes of Derrick Gainer, Juan Manuel Marquez and Rocky Juarez. His record stands at 47-0-2 (22 KOs).

If the three remaining fights are along the lines of the rest of his career, minus the upset win over JM Marquez, then I'm afraid that Chris John's legacy will remain that of a Champion who with one notable exception was never really challenged. It's a shame that he'll be relegated to that group, which includes guys like Sven Ottke, because I think he was better than that.....but with boxing politics and some fighters content on protecting their records, we sadly never really got to see what he could do.

I felt Marquez was robbed against John, but then I would.

Gav-

I totally agree with you, I watched the fight (I was one of the few people that had it in the pre-YouTube days, and believe it or not, for a couple weeks there I was actually popular.........no, no, trust me, I really, really was, and all it took was me mailing out copies to people mlol/). Marquez had John hurt repeatedly throughout the fight, and at least one of the pt deductions, if not both, was complete bs.
