Is Saul Alvarez avoiding Austin Trout and the other top contenders?

Written by James Tonks

'Golden Boy' Mexican star Saul Alvarez is currently 22 years old and the current WBC light middleweight title champion of the world.

On September 15th Alvarez takes on yet another fighter not from the top of the light middleweight division.

Josesito Lopez recently moved up to the welterweight division where he defeated Victor Ortiz. Lopez is to move up yet another division simultaneously to fight Alvarez for the light middleweight WBC belt.

Simple answer is yes.

Slightly more complicated and much more realistic answer is at the moment Canelo gets paid large amounts of money for facing just about anyone.

While the paydays are high and the pressure is off he is obviously going to take the path of least resistance. Every boxer does.

Hes not out and out avoiding the top guys in the division, but at the moment hes in a honeymoon period where he just doesnt have the pressure to face them.

Nice article, Bud. I think (actually I hope) that at least some of the avoidance is due to Canelo's youth (still just 21) and not all about Marketability success. If it's truly just the latter, then fans are going to get fed up pretty quick, and the honeymoon period that Meat mentions won't last all that long. I gave him some credit for fighting a still reasonably viable Cintron, less so for the fading Mosley, and IMO he gets a pass for this one with Lopez because of Paul Williams' accident and Ortiz's upset. I do think there's an expiration date on avoiding the real challenges though, especially if they plan on doing PPV's.

I can't understand why people are giving him a pass on the Lopez fight due to Ortiz losing. Ortiz had never fought at 154 (heck he'd never really fought at 147) so he was an awful opponent himself. Not only that but Ortiz had been stopped in the Mayweather bout anyway, so he was effectively jumping a division and the queue to a get a title fight.

I think they are stalling this Kid.

He has skills and ability but he has so much Star Power and pull back in Mexico that they slammed on the brakes.

To put Hatton and then Rhodes in with him mean't only one winner and the promoters must have thought the US/Mexican market naive.

There needs to be a step-up and beating much lighter opponents isn't it.

Let the Kid fight and he will pass but this "smothering in cotton wool" strategy is going to have negative effects.
