Trainer Joe Gallagher has dismissed any possibility of a potential show stealing war between John Murray and Scott Harrison on the undercard of Ricky Burns against Kevin Mitchell in September.

Prior to speaking to Gallagher over the phone, BoxingScene had been informed that Harrison, a former world featherweight champion, had been offered the Murray fight and negotiations were due to take place by the end of the week.

When this information was put forward to Gallagher, he said: “Its news to me. What’s Scott Harrison going to do for John Murray’s career? He needs us much more than we need him. Right now John is on holiday and six to seven weeks preparation wouldn’t be enough for him anyway. I want him to have a warm up fight in October first anyway.”

Murray, a former European lightweight champion endured two high profile losses last year against Kevin Mitchell and Brandon Rios, a fight that was marred by Rios’s inability to make the 135lb limit thus making his WBA title vacant.

Despite Murray’s back-to-back defeats, Gallagher told me that a gentleman’s agreement is in place for his Mancunian charge to get his second world title shot.

“If Kevin Mitchell beats Ricky Burns, Kevin has told us he will give John his chance just like we gave him,” said Gallagher. “Kevin always tells me that every time we see him. John didn’t have to give Kevin the chance when he did, but that’s the kind of fighter he is. He seeks the biggest challenges. John had a higher ranking at the time and more to lose, but he gave Kevin a shot. So we hope Kevin sticks to his word if he beats Ricky.”
