Ali v Louis

This has been mentioned in passing before, but I've not seen a dedicated thread for it.

The two most popular contenders for greatest heavyweight ever: Who wins?

I remain fiercely neutral because I've seen most of Ali's career retrospectively and only a handful of Louis fights here and there.

In his autobiography Sugar Ray, Sugar Ray Robinson, who was good friends with both and also knew a thing or two about boxing grin// said that he had no doubt that Joe Louis would've won, he also thought that with his awkward style, Jersey Joe Walcott would've given Ali fits.

What date did he write the autobiography? Has a big significance if not written after 1980. I know he lived til 1989 but not sure how clear his mind was in later years.

Scott-

I don't know that I'd call it that, but yeah, it was written post-Zora Folley fight during Ali's exile. SRR recounts a poolside conversation with Ali in which him he told Muhammad he couldn't get out of Army service and he had to step forward when called. Contrary to the story that Ali tells about being confident in his choice, SRR talks about his being confused and unsure on what to do.

It relates to something Rob said.
