Best amateur boxer?

Think Donald Curry had the best amateur record.

Teofilo Stevenson was an absolute Legend - won Heavyweight 3 times and really wish he had some how been able to turn Pro.

Rob-

As good as Stevenson was, I always thought the guy who followed him, Felix Savon, would've made a better Pro, I think he was a little bit more mobil.

Stevenson, Papp and Savon are the 3 obvious ones due to their Olympics successes however others to think about:

Mario Kindelan

Guillermo Rigondeaux

Donald Curry

Mark Breland

And the first ever boxer to win 2 Olympic golds, Harry Mallin

Kindelan goes down in my estimation because I cannot believe he lost to Khan. There was something not quite right about that rematch.

$$$ for what was an exhibition for a guy who was all but retired... shouldn't take away from his achievements.

Oh and Lomachenko deserves a mention even though he's still active.

Teofilo Stevenson is another, I believe he won 3 gold medals like Papp.

Skav-

Yeah, Papp and BOTH Cuban Hw's we've mentioned (Stevenson and Savon) are the only three-time Gold Medalists. Had the Cubans not boycotted the '84 Games in L.A., Stevenson would've likely won a fourth, he'd beaten eventual Gold Medalist Tyrell Biggs on several occasions.

The thing about these multi wins is that at a certain point it becomes man against boy. 30 year old against an 18 year old and for that reason, the achievement is not as Great as it first appears.

Agreed. Not just in boxing, but we were seeing the same thing in sports like Hockey, where the Soviet Red Army Team would periodically reload and always had Vets in their Primes facing teenagers who'd yet to turn Pro from the western countries.

I always wondered about the Cuban team. I know they are probably the best trained amateur team and they are hugely confident but a young, talented kid ain't got much chance against a seasoned Cuban due to age, strength and experience. Its like throwing a kid in with a Klitschko - only one winner.

Rob-

Speaking of the Cuban Team, here's a documentary on one of the local gym teams that frequent Cuba, the kids actually live at the boxing academy despite their young age and only visit home on the weekends. It aired on BBC about 2006 and is available on SoSoboxing.

That was on terrestrial TV over here a while back Dave but my Sky box deleted it!

I don't know too much abouts the amateurs but from i've heard it has to be Stevenson?

Razz-

It wasn't the best documentary ever, but it was pretty amazing that they started them so young, that would never fly in a western civilization. As far as Stevenson, I think if we were putting this category to a vote, he'd probably be leading the pack.
