Richard Abril-Gavin Rees Agreement Reached For The Fall

By Ryan Burton

BoxingScene has been advised that an agreement has been reached for WBA lightweight champion Richard Abril (17-3-1) to face British lightweight champion Gavin Rees (37-1-1) in the UK. According to Abril the fight will take place either in late September or October.

"We have agreed to fight Rees. The fight will take place in late September or in early October. It depends on what date the British TV gives us," Abril told BoxingScene.com

Rees last fought on July 7th when he knocked out Derry Matthews at the Motorpoint Arena in Sheffield. Abril last fought in April when he lost a controversial decision to former champion Brandon Rios who came into the fight overweight.

Abril said that he looks forward to the challenge of fighting Rees in his backyard and that he is sure that he will win the fight.

"It will be my first time fighting in that country and it will be a great experience for me. I am ready for whatever he brings and I promise you that I will win because I will give everything I have when I step inside the ring," Abril confidently stated.

Abril is an awkward fighter but Rees is a lot better than he gets credit for.

Hes a lot better than Rios, who has no plan b if he cant blast you out. Rees will apply intelligent pressure and I really think he can pick up another world title here.

Silly to write Rees off. Abril is not unbeatable and Rees has under rated skills. Many, said he couldn't beat M'Baye and he won quite easily.

Rees has output, defensive skills and under his new trainer - adding power.

Abril has lost 3, so is hardly some unbeatable force.

He has three losses on his record, but there is no way in the world he lost to Rios or Prescott I'm a huge Rios fan but that decision was a disgrace to boxing.. I haven't seen the other fight, so I couldn't speak to that.

Abril himself has decent power, is pretty slick, good handspeed, a solid jab and is bloody difficult to hit cleanly, all arms and elbows.

He is everything you say. I think Ree,s at his short height will prove awkward for Abril. How does he cope with having to hit that shorter guy? Interesting, fight.

Rees is the same height as Acosta, who was decked twice en route to a wide UD, and a single inch shorter than Rios, who was utterly humiliated. So the answer is "perfectly well", which is why Rees is going to have a repeat of the Kotelnik fight, if he's lucky.
