The_budweiser
Different divisions, so surely can't be true? Money talks I guess, but if it's true then something must be wrong?
iamasadlittleboy
Tis true sadly, the guy in charge of the WBO needs...a kick
Meathead
How on earth can that be justified? So basically he had no incentive to make weight because he knew full well that he would be moving up and would get a title shot anyway.

irondave85
Stripping Ricardo Lopez and allowing Eric Jamili and Mickey Cantwell to fight for "his" title My memory is a bit fuzzy on this one, but didn't Lopez relinquish WBO the strap before the first fight with Alvarez? It was 1997 though and I am open to contradiction as I am going purely on memory. As an aside, I always had a soft spot for Cantwell and I thought for sure he was going to be crowned champion against the little known Jamili, but he suffered a horrible cut on the bridge of his nose early in the fight and bled like a stuffed pig until the referee stopped it. Just wasn't meant to be for poor Mickey.

Just wasn't meant to be for poor Mickey. I've read two different stories. One was that he apparently offended the WBO by saying he was going to give the belt to his father so they took that as him vacating. The other one is that Jose Sillyman said he wasn't allowed to defend it against Alvarez and the WBC and WBO got in a huge row over it. Also, as part of the anti-wbo thing...what were they doing allowing Mayan to fight for the.miniweight title a few years earlier? As far as I'm aware Mayan had the shortest career of any one to fight for a world title.
