Broner fails to make weight

Recommended Posts

The fight is off now.

Broner agreed to make 140 by this morning only to come on the scales at 143.

Escobedos trainer reckons that by fight time Broner could be up at 150+ so they called the fight off.

Two things, firstly fair play to Escobedo and his team. Its a bold move when you get a big shot like that.

Secondly theres not making weight and theres not making weight. Broner clearly had no intention of being 143 by the morning. I wouldnt go so far as saying he had no intention of making weight in the first instance, although 3.5lbs over was pretty shocking, but the 2nd weigh in he clearly thought that he could get away with it and Escobedos team wouldnt pull out.

Apparently, he'll be in line for a shot at the vacant title, so if that's true, it's a pretty shrewd move.

Just looked at his twitter feed as a result of espn mentioning his posting f a twinkie picture. last week he said he was addicted to twinkies, posted a picture of a Twix ice cream he "had to buy" and then mentioned he was at McDonald's.No wonder he can't make weight.

It's a bit of a p*ss-take to fail to make the weight because he hasn't even bothered to try and come in on target for his weightclass, then not bother to try and lose a single pound for the second weigh-in...and not only that, after agreeing to a stipulation to weigh no more than 140lbs for the fight day weight in (in order for the fight to even go ahead), he's 3.5lbs over that as well...

The guy is ripping the p*ss imo and he could do with Escobedo punching some sense into him.

He should have his purse witheld like Castillo got vs Corrales.

Ringnews24 did two reports on this fight.

Broner the winner and loser

by Jon Campbell

Last night on HBO's main event in Cincinnati, Ohio. Adrien 'the problem' Broner (24-0) extended his undefeated record and lost his world title at the same time, beating Vicente Escobedo (26-3) in the fifth round. After the issues surrounding Broner's weight he come out and gave an impressive performance even though admittedly having a 5lb advantage on the night. Despite showing exceptional skills the discipline and maturity Broner shows in the ring makes him a potential future great across multiple weight classes.

The one thing which stand out about Broner is his hand speed, I seldom see a boxer with such quick hands. He is very sharp and shows tremendous reflexes. He doesn't get complacent either and holds a tight, high guard the majority of the times.

He has a very much pocket defense with his feet planted and using his upper body to evade shots. His stance is wide in order to gain leverage for power shots either to counter or to launch his own attacks. He is sparing with his flurries, only doing so when he sees it as not too much risk. Trading punches when he chooses and not being brought into an exchange. He landed many snappy shots to the body and a whopping 45% power punches.

Escobedo, moving down in weight to Super-Featherweight, despite not winning a round against the superior Broner gave a good account of himself. He was attempting to engage in a fight with Broner but struggled to really wear down the defense in order to capitalize. After the sustained punch-taking he slowed down in the fifth, after a good flurry his trainer decide to cut Escobedo's losses and throw the towel in.

Broner vs Escobedo full show report

by Richard Allan McRae

You must give HBO a pat on the back for bring boxing to Cincinnati, Ohio. Which just so happens to be the home town of Adrien “The Problem” Broner. Vicente Escobedo has mope problems then just boxing Adrien Broner, he have to deal with a pro Broner crowd who are going to be in a foul mood as their young superstar was unable to make weight yesterday and had to hand over his title. The bout will take place but only Escobedo can win the title. I would not want to in the shoes of Vicente Escobedo tonight, have to box a man who just lost his title on the scales, in from of his home town crowd. This card did not almost happen as their where complaints from the Vicente Escobedo camp, and numbers where moved around in Escobedo favor and the card was on. It was said the deal took place only 5 hours before the card was set to start. And on the undercard will have undefeated Keith Thurman take on Orlando Lora.

The following bouts were not televised but ringnews24.com has provided the results;

Christopher Pearson 3 (KO 2) -0 -0 vs. Angel Hernandez 14 (KO 11) -10 (KO 5) -1

4 rounds in the middleweight division.

Christopher Pearson moves his record up to 4 (KO 3) -0 -0 with a TKO win at 2:08 of the a 2nd round over Angel Hernandez whose record now stands at 14 (KO 11) -11 (KO 6) -1.

The one thing which stand out about Broner is his hand speed

The one thing that stands out about Broner is he never uses his jab. Even last night, he was sort of limply pawing with it and then just wailing away with hooks when he got anywhere near.

It could be a very effective weapon for him. He needs to start using it.

The one thing that stands out for me with Broner is a bit of a contradiction.

His hands are blisteringly quick, that cant be argued against, but his foot, head and body movement are really quite shockingly slow.

He can keep his hands low and get his shots off, but he cant get his head out of the way from straight right hands.
