Big fight in Argentina tonight (and tomorrow)

Tonight:

Mateo Damian Veron (13-6-2-2, 1) defends the Argentinian Light Middleweight title against Javier Francisco Maciel (22-2, 16).

 

Veron lost 6 of his first 14 bouts (6-6-1-1) before rebuilding his career (7-0-0-1) and taking the title with a victory against Alejandro Gustavo Falliga. Veron's rebuilding has seen him scoring notable results with Jorge Sebastien Heiland (draw 8), Guido Nicolas Pitto (MD10 when Pitto was 15-0) and Oscar Roberto Medina (UD6, Medina was 21-5-2-1 going into that bout).

 

Maciel, known as "La Bestia" (The Beast) is a little more well known to boxing fans than Veron but going into this bout as the challenger. Maciel made a name for himself (in hardcore circles) by putting on an impressive performance against the WBO Middleweight champion Dmitry Pirog, losing a close and competitive decison. Maciel has bounced back from the Pirog bout with 4 opening round stoppages and now has 10 opening round wins in 24 bouts.

Tomorrow:

The interim WBA Light Welterweight champion Ismael El Massoudi (36-3, 14) will be making the first defence of his title as he faces the hard hitting Diego Gabriel Chaves (20-0, 16).

 

Frenchman El Massoudi scored a notable upset last year when he became the first man to stop Souleymane M'baye and become the interim WBA Champion at 147lbs (despite weighing just 137.25lbs, proving an argument I had a while back...). As well as M'baye, El Massoudi has a few recognisable names on his record including Richard Drilzane and Laszlo Komjathi but nothing that will strike terror into the top guys at 147.

 

Argentinian challenger Diego Alberto Chaves was once mooted as an opponent for Frankie Gavin, though in all honesty Gavin should be thankful that that bout fell through as Chaves is one of the most promising talents in Argentina. Nicknamed "La Joya" (The Jewel) he is seen as one of the uncrowned princes of Argentinian boxing. With a strong amateur background Chaves can do it all and like compatriot Marcos he has shown plenty of heart getting up from knockdowns to fight back to victory.

 

This bout is a big step up for Chaves though one he is expected to win and a victory may see him joining the party at 147lbs.
