Amir Khan's New Conditioning Coach

I didn't realise he'd dropped Ariza again, and apparently he's replaced him with one Ruben Tabares, who supposedly worked with Haye. Fair enough, Haye always looked ripped, but then again, since when has Khan's strength or conditioning been an issue? His chin, certainly, his complete inability to deal with inside fighters or counterpunchers, sure, but not his stamina or his strength.

More depressingly, I fear the guy could be a quack after I read this from Khan on BBC Sport

Khan has spoken of his confidence ahead of facing Garcia, something he puts down to a new training regime.

The Bolton-fighter has enlisted the services of strength and conditioning coach Ruben Tabares, who has introduced some unusual practices into Khan's preparations.

"He's made me change to a non-fluoride toothpaste because apparently fluoride is really dangerous, contains rat poison or something and can even kill you," Khan explained.

"I'm one of those guys who listens to what my trainers tell me - even if it sounds a little bit strange sometimes - and I do it anyway."

Generally though, he's an amazing strength and conditioning coach, one of the best I've had.

'He's smart, clever, the way he puts me through my paces. I feel like I'm dying but it's good to be put in your discomfort zone.

'It's also good because he's worked with David Haye before and it's good when he compares me with David, saying 'David can do this,' etc, because I love a challenge and so because David did 10 reps, I'll do 20.

Fluoride contains rat poison or something? Jesus H Christmas. And how do we suppose they're getting around the fluoride in the water supply? Has Khan been banned from swimming in the sea? That's got huge amounts of fluoride in. The worst part is he doesn't even know why his trainer wants him to avoid it.

And trying to outdo Haye? Is that not a recipe for overtraining?

As for

I'm one of those guys who listens to what my trainers tell me - even if it sounds a little bit strange sometimes - and I do it anyway.
- I cannot wait until he fails a drug test....

40 views and no replies? Guess my ego and I will just wait til Murphy gets here then.

Reporting for duty, Gav grin// Seriously, it sounds like this new guy is selling Khan a bill of goods, there's no danger with regard to flouride. Here's an article that mentions some of the faulty arguments along those lines.

Reuben Tabares is very good at what he does.

Hes been in very high demand recently, mainly due to his work with Haye but he also works with other athletes and Football clubs I understand.

Khan could do a lot worse than having him helping him out. That guy who was in charge in between his an Arizas last spat for example.

For Garcia to win hes gonna have to pull off something hes not shown in a ring yet. Not saying it cant happen, but the likelihood is very very remote. Dont believe me, ask his dad. That guy is talking a lot for a reason.

As for following what his trainer said, Khan of all people is going to be reading every label at the moment.

Fluoride IS a mild poison, but it's stupid to avoid toothpaste, when like you say, it's added to the water supplies of almost every country with a networked water system...

"Rat" poison though hahaha... mlol/

It's also stupid to listen to someone without knowing the reasoning behind their recommendations, especially if it's someone you don't know and haven't worked with before to build up a trust.

I heard an interview with him on one of the boxing radio shows I listen to, but I can't for the life of me remember which one (I think it was either Leave It In The Ring or ATG Radio). He's an ex-Track Star who really knows his stuff as far as conditioning and especially nutrition/diet. It was kind of funny because at one point he mentioned that as a teenager he'd won some Track Championship sponsored by McDonalds and the prize was a Gold Card that allowed you to eat for free at any McDonalds in the world. He wasn't familiar with McDonalds at that point and so he visited one, took one look at the menu................and then on his way out, gave the card away mlol/

It can be used to kill rats...but so is Warfarin which is used medically to stop DVT.

Yes it is stupid to avoid toothpaste. However it is also beneficial to make sure that the toothpaste you do use does not have Flouride (

http://www.fluoridealert.org/

) or sodium lauryl sulfate (Both Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) and its close relative Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) are commonly used in many soaps, shampoos, detergents, toothpastes and other products that we expect to "foam up". Both chemicals are very effective foaming agents, chemically known as surfactants.

Unfortunately, both sodium laureth sulfate and its cousin are also very dangerous, highly irritating chemicals. Far from giving "healthy shining hair" and "beautiful skin", soaps and shampoos containing sodium laureth sulfate can lead to direct damage to the hair follicle, skin damage, permanent eye damage in children and even liver toxicity.

Although sodium laureth sulfate is somewhat less irritating than SLS, it cannot be metabolised by the liver and its effects are therefore much longer-lasting. This not only means it stays in the body tissues for longer, but much more precious energy is used getting rid of it.

A report published in the Journal of The American College of Toxicology in 1983 showed that concentrations of SLS as low as 0.5% could cause irritation and concentrations of 10-30% caused skin corrosion and severe irritation. National Institutes of Health "Household Products Directory" of chemical ingredients lists over 80 products that contain SLS and SLES. Some soaps have concentrations of up to 30%, which the ACT report called "highly irritating and dangerous".).

a lot of websites are out there to debunk the dangerous of chemicals put in out food or other products but the facts still remains, These chemicals are dangerous.

back to boxing- Khan will swallow anything.

, These chemicals are dangerous.

All chemicals are dangerous - you can die from ingesting too much table salt, you can die from drinking too much water. Unless you ingest vast quantities of these chemicals(fluoride included), you're not going to see any serious side effects, which is exactly why shampoo bottles say things like "avoid contact with eyes, rinse thoroughly with water if contact occurs" and toothpaste says "Don't eat this, you silly bastard" or something to that effect.

I think anyone who has concerns about this sort of thing should do proper research rather than just "Oh, well he says it's bad for you, can't remember why" and just blindly follow, especially when they're a professional sportsman and some knowledge of nutrition and biology would be extremely useful. Otherwise, it's tinfoil hats all round.

My favorite, and I'm not sure if they have them over in the UK or not, are "University Studies" that reveal things that are either incredibly obvious or so patently insane that they have to rank 23,406th amongst the average persons everyday concerns. Some Doctors in a University Lab justify their Government Grant by injecting a Rat with a half-pound of fluoride a day and then surprisingly he dies within a week. lol//

As far as the warnings, Gav, my personal favorite in that regard are the plastic bags that are used to cover garments that are returned from the Dry Cleaners and contain the warning "Not a Toy. Suffocation could result". I realize that at some point that a tragedy has occurred or they wouldn't write that on there and that makes me sad, but on the other hand do they really think some sane-thinking adult is going to hand it to their kid?
