Big Heavyweight fight is OFF!

***Rahman cancels! WBA Championship in Hamburg called off!***

What a shame! WBA Heavyweight Champion Alexander Povetkin will not be able to defend his title on July 14 in Hamburg. The fight night at the Alsterdorfer Sporthalle has been called off due to an injury sustained by the challenger Hasim Rahman. The number one WBA ranked heavyweight needed an operation to remove a cyst on his right hand and therefore is not able to fight Povetkin. To find a fitting replacement for a Heavyweight title shot in such a short space of time is unrealistic.

“I am very disappointed,“ said Alexander Povetkin after hearing of the cancellation. “The preparations were going really well. I am in great shape. Obviously I wanted to show that inside of the ring and do a good job.”

Jack Culcay and Edmund Gerber who were also scheduled to step into the ring on July 14, would have liked to fight in Hamburg. Chris Meyer, Managing Director of Sauerland Event: “All of us were looking forward to the event. But it is our responsibility to deliver world class boxing to the spectators inside the arena and the audience at home in front of their TVs. Therefore, after hearing from the injury of Alexander’s opponent, we had to cancel the whole show.”

If Hasim Rahman will remain the mandatory challenger of the WBA, lies in the hands of the association.

Tickets bought for the event can be returned at the place of purchase.

I think that would be a real drawback because at some point that becomes a public admission that you bought tickets to this fiasco. I'd certainly wear the same disguise that I assume you wore when you went in and bought them in the first place grin//

Who'd have thought finding a substitute worthy of replacing Hassim Rahman would be any kind of a roadblock? mlol/

The biggest admission, is if your German or American and originally bought tickets plus hotel and aeroplane to watch it in London.

I bet some poor bugger out there had to then reschedule, flights and hotel for Germany. That person will never step forward. mlol/

I doubt that many in Germany bought tickets for a fight hastily arranged for next week tbh.

Anyone know why Rahman has pulled out?

Anyone know why Rahman has pulled out?

He apparently had to have a cyst removed.

He should be having his license removed, because his common sense seems to have gone already.

Rahman should be nowhere near a ring at this stage.

He's fighting on purely for money and that's when it starts to get dangerous.

I would've thought taking the easy way out in the last Toney fight would've finally put a stake in the heart of what remained of Hassim Rahman's career...........I haven't the slightest idea what Povetkin had to gain or more amazingly why the promoter thought anyone would want to see it.
