Who will win the "Canelo" Lottery?

Recommended Posts

This week the boxing world suffered a major setback when former 2 division champion Paul “The Punisher” Williams was left paralyzed from the waist down following a tragic motorcycle accident. The accident left undefeated champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez without an opponent on September 15th.

“Canelo”, who has recently dedicated his next fight to Williams, was slated to face James Kirkland. The fight appeared to be sign, sealed, and delivered for September 15th on HBO, but Kirkland then pulled out citing a shoulder injury. The injury is being said to have Kirkland shelved until October/November of this year.

Once again “Canelo” and his promoter Golden Boy are searching for a replacement. There are many deserving contender and fellow champions that are being looked at. The following is a breakdown of potential fighters that could win the “Canelo” lottery:

Erislandy Lara:

Lara is currently my number one choice. He is currently the number one contender to the WBC Jr. Middleweight title, now held by Alvarez. Lara is also under the same promotional stable as Alvarez, and has recently been clamoring for the opportunity. Lara, who dropped a very controversial decision to Paul Williams last year, is coming off of a 2nd round dismantling of fringe contender Ronald Hearns. The only issue is Lara, even though he 100% deserves the opportunity, is too much of a risk for Alvarez and too little of a reward in the eyes of the casual fan. Though the boxing public would be drooling over this battle, Golden Boy doesn’t feel risking their “Golden Boy” to someone who isn’t as marketable.

Carlos Molina:

Carlos Molina may not have a gorgeous record but he has proven time after time he is worthy of a title shot. Since losing to Mike Alvarado, in a close Majority Decision, in 2007 he has gone 11-1-1. His loss was a very controversial DQ to James Kirkland in a fight he was clearly winning before the referee disqualified him, in Kirkland’s home State of Texas. The other blemish was a 10 round majority draw against current number one contender Erislandy Lara. The choice of Molina could be held up by not being a Golden Boy fighter, and that his record is not as marketable to the general public. Even though the boxing public knows it would be a competitive fight the general public will think it as a huge mismatch.
