The_budweiser
Promoter Lou DiBella told NYFightBlog.com Wednesday he’s tired of the rampant speculation surrounding the mismatch he believes WBO world welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao versus WBC world welterweight titlist “Pretty Boy” Floyd Mayweather would ultimately prove to be. “I’m through talking about Pacquiao and May,” said DiBella, 51, a graduate of Tufts University and Harvard Law School. “The two most recognizable names in boxing, closest thing to our Super Bowl. Well, guess what, our Super Bowl hasn’t happened in a couple years and I’m guessing it won’t happen on May 5. How big a tragedy is that? The tragedy is the people asking this effin question too many effin times, that’s the effin tragedy. The tragedy is pay attention to the sport, and realize that these two emeffers aren’t the sport, the same way that Mike Tyson wasn’t the sport. HBO had its greatest success when Tyson was fighting across the street at Showtime.” Las Vegas Justice of the Peace Melissa Saragosa ruled January 6 to postpone the incarceration of Mayweather (42-0, 26 KOs) until June 1. Mayweather (53-3-2, 38 KOs) was justifiably sentenced last month to 87-days behind bars and was scheduled to surrender to authorities that afternoon to begin serving his term. In September 2010, “Pretty Boy,” who earned a bronze medal as a featherweight at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, was indicted on four felony counts for allegedly hitting his sweetheart and the mother of his children. Rather than facing the prospect of 34-years in prison for his heinous crimes, Mayweather pleaded guilty to a reduced battery domestic violence charge and no contest to two harassment charges in a “Sin City” courtroom. Saragosa allowed Mayweather to remain at large so he can meet contractual obligations and bolster Vegas’ economy by fighting there May 5. Many pundits and onlookers presumed the judge’s decision would press the epic, and long overdue, clash between Mayweather and Pacquiao. Pacquiao, the first pugilist in history to win 10 world crowns in eight separate weight divisions, eked out an extremely controversial majority decision victory over WBA, WBO and The Ring lightweight king Juan Manuel Marquez in their third fight November 12 in “The Entertainment Capital of the World.” In stark contrast to Pacquiao, Mayweather badly outclassed, and essentially embarrassed, Marquez (53-6-1, 39 KOs) with a shutout unanimous decision triumph in September 2009. “Everything Juan Manuel Marquez does well Floyd does five times as well. Marquez didn’t win 30 seconds of his fight against Floyd. Marquez’ style gave Pacquiao fits, explain to me where Pacquiao’s chances lie in beating Mayweather? I don’t think he has any,” said DiBella. “I think if anything’s clear right now, is that it’s a very bad fight for Manny Pacquiao. It appears to me the people around Pacquiao and Pacquiao may believe that.” Longtime respected boxing trainer Roger "Pit" Perron from Brockton agrees with DiBella and predicted Mayweather would overwhelm Pacquiao if they ever throw fists. "If and when they fight, put your money on Floyd," said Perron, 75, who worked with International Boxing Hall of Famer Marvelous Marvin Hagler at Petronelli Brothers Gym in "The City of Champions." "He (Mayweather) must be frothing at the mouth after watching Manny's last fight." It is apparent that Pacquiao’s struggles with Marquez have caused promoter Bob Arum to protect his Filipino lottery ticket at all costs. “If no one can force Mayweather to fight Pacquiao, in a fight that will probably generate $150 million, then how can you force any fight to happen? Bob Arum and Top Rank, most of the fights they make involve a Top Rank fighter against a Top Rank fighter,” DiBella said. “That seems to be the trend, rather than the biggest fights happening, it’s the ones that make the most economic sense, and pose the least risk. That’s not good for fans, that’s not good for boxing. It’s unfortunate, but there’s not a single entity out there that can force Mayweather-Pacquiao to happen.” An opponent the caliber of Floyd Mayweather is “a very bad fight for Manny Pacquiao.” Nevertheless, boxing fans absolutely deserve to see the two preeminent pugilists battle in the ring. Sadly, Manny Pacquiao will likely never scrap Floyd Mayweather and “that’s not good for fans, that’s not good for boxing.” http://www.examiner.com/boxing-in-boston/lou-dibella-says-floyd-mayweather-would-destroy-manny-pacquiao
McBride
I've long believed that Mayweather boxes his ears off, but I dont think he overwhelmes him, just a very wide UD. Its no secret that Pakow likes his opponents to either charge in like Hatton did, or be that much slower than him enabling him to move in unload then be back out again before they can react. Mayweather doesn't fit either criteria.
Aaron
Floyd would stand Manny on his head.

Harvard law school, eh? Lessee, Manny wipes the floor with the tough controversial rematches Floydy couldn't handle, Oscar and Ricky, knocking them into premature retirement, messed em so bad they had to check into drug rehab a couple of years later. Then he more comprehensively beats a better prepared Mosley without being punched out on his feet like Floydy. Manny also forces Marquez on his back foot consistently into a defensive counter puncher, something Floydy could never do. None of which mean much if they fight when the terms ain't even agreed to. Cortez could dock Manny 5 points in the first round as the handicapper and Floydy could run around like he did against Marquez and Oscar, big whup. Louie, big newsflash for ya: Manny's last two fights have been against Golden Boy fighters ever since Oscar apologized in public enough for Manny to drop his lawsuit. The suit against Floydy is still pending. How's about a big DUH for Mr. Harvard Law Grad.......DUH! The trend is to fight Golden Boy fighters as Manny has done 4 out of the 7 fights as a welter. Floydy only fights for the WBC and Golden Boy against Golden Boy fighters at the MGM Grand since moving up to welter, all 5 fights and is on record as saying he won't fight Arum fighters.....quintuple DUH! brooklynbrawler
I firmly believed that Manny would beat Floyd, until he fought Marquez. But one fight doesn't make a fighter. Though the debate has firmly swung in Floyd's favour without him even having to throw a punch (just the way he likes to handle most of the big potential opponents who emerge and stand a half a chance), I wouldn't completely write Manny off. I'm fed up of debating a fight I don't even see happening so I'm not going to bother re-churning my reasoning for the umpteenth time...there's only one way to settle it, and until then it doesn't really matter what DiBella or anyone else has to say on the matter... McBride
I, like most people have firm beliefs. Mine are quite simple. Pakow has got NOTHING that Mayweather hasn't dealt with before. ( fanboys have no need to reply ) Mayweather has FAR, FAR more of what Pakow struggles with. It really is that easy. A simple question where has Mayweather EVER struggled with plodding, come forward guys? Answer NEVER. Where has Mayweather struggled against counter fighters? Answer NEVER. Juan Manuel Marquez. Those are the only words neccessary. Common sense tells you that Mayweather has to be a huge favourite, should they fight, and that has nothing to do with personalities, but everything to do with ability.
