edsel77x
A match-up between pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr and lineal middleweight champion Sergio Martinez is now a lucrative back-up option should a welterweight unification involving the American and Filipino superstar Manny Pacquiao continuously fail to bear fruit, as confirmed by Martinez’s representative – Lou DiBella of DiBella Entertainment, who has engaged in conversation with Mayweather’s handlers regarding the fight. “There was a very brief conversation with Mayweather’s representatives where it became clear that in the eventuality that it’s clear there won’t be a Pacquiao fight – and I don’t think they’ve hit that point yet – that they would consider Sergio,” confirmed DiBella told Boxing Scene recently. Since Mayweather’s return to the ring – a fourth round knockout over Victor Ortiz in September – Floyd (42-0-0, 26ko) has been outspoken about giving his fans fights that they want, whilst word from Leonard Ellerbe, a long-time confidant of Mayweather’s, was that ‘the little fella’ was the next fighter on their agenda. All roads, it seemed, were leading to a Pacquiao (54-3-2, 38ko) and Mayweather fight in the summer of next year, an unlikely turn-up considering the failed negotiations in the past, however, one potential obstacle appeared to be the apparent unwillingness on the behalf of Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum who, upon completion of Manny’s slim points victory over Juan Manuel Marquez in November, stated that an opponent would not even be thought about until the new year, let alone approached. DiBella’s comments, though, are perhaps proof that WBC welterweight world championship incumbent Mayweather, is only looking for super fights in 2012 as an alignment with Martinez (48-2-2, 27ko) would require a second dip into the weight pool north of welter, most likely at a catchweight, or at the super welterweight limit of 154lbs. http://onthebeak.com/2011/12/19/if-no-pacquiao-fight-mayweather-will-pursue-martinez-333/
