WelshDevilRob
Was a lot of fuss about the stoppage in the Rolando Romero vs Ismael Barroso fight. What did you guys make of it? My fight report on this travesty. Rolando Romero wins due to premature stoppage by Tony Weeks https://www.ringnews24.com/2023/05/14/rolando-romero-wins-due-to-premature-stoppage-by-tony-weeks/
Ledhed1
Horrendous. First the botched knockdown ruling, which could have been fixed by Nevada's replay review, but of course we never got there. The stoppage smells to high heaven. The more marketable A-side gifted the win. What's PBC gonna do with a 40-year old Venezuelan? Romero talked the promoter's talk straight after the fight. Match him with KingRy. Of course, if Puello gets cleared, he'd be next. And we'd be hearing much less from Romero. How does one "walk" into a title shot like this given Romero's recent results? They don't; but they can talk their way into one. I was thinking precisely this when Al Bernstein pointed out Rolly's low level of opposition (of those he's beaten). In boxing, a mouth will get you places. And that's about all Rolly has. Pitiful performance through the first 8 rounds. So how does a referee make such a "mistake?" As I said, this one STINKS. Every referee knows who the A-side is. A ref as experienced as Weeks need not be briefed before the fight. He knows what's expected of him. The deck is stacked in the A-side's favor. Those are among the terms of engagement in boxing. Including a referee who knows what the promoter would prefer. Not an outright fix; if the B-side leaves no doubt, he won't be denied. But any opening to facilitate the desired result while clouding his actions in exercising discretion, the ref does his thing. Are we to believe Weeks is incompetent? He's got a stellar rep. Paved the way for one of the most dramatic finishes in the sport's history by letting Corrales continue and take out Castillo. Precisely the opposite of his decision here. He merits the benefit of the doubt based on his career performance. So if not incompetent, there's only one alternative. Most times the corruption is subtle enough to merely make people shake their heads. But no one he answers to - commission, alphabet body, promoter - is dissatisfied with the result. He knew what he was doing and he'll continue to get his assignments. The last line of defense is the aggrieved fighter. But they rarely rock the boat. The best Barroso can do is demand a rematch but the WBA is under no obligation. Latest on the non-stop assembly line of casualties in an industry that's a business before it's a competition.
robprosser
He's not that incompetent. This is a brown envelope job. 2
LondonRingRules
- - Nice write up, Rob. You on the staff again? Weeks can be horrendous when he wants. When pre BALCO Juan Manuel Marquez was struggling with a busted eye vs Joel Casamayor in a fight shaping up to be a stinker draw, he scored a KD where Weeks flops his 250 lbs to cross to pin the 135lb Casa to the canvas for the KO just as the fight was finally shaping up to be a classic. Casa on his end days was disposable whereas Marquez was the Vegas Darling as Manny found out in their first fight. https://boxrec.com/wiki/index.php/Joel_Casamayor_vs._Juan_Manuel_Marquez 1

Mainly just publishing the PR on Ringnews24, to keep it flowing. Though am doing PR for a July show in St. Louis - Vaughn Alexander vs Courtney Pennington.. Doing plenty of night shifts, so plenty of time to watch the boxing and sometimes write. I honestly thought Weeks had retired, was surprised to see him ref Romero vs Barroso.
BoztheMadman
Weeks has always been a bad ref, even a corrupt one possibly. I was just watching that Hopkins-Echols 2 fight, he didn't take a point from Hopkins for punching Echols behind the head and nearly putting him out of the game, but when Echols bodyslammed Hopkins in retaliation for his butting, he took TWO points away. And that terrible handling of the Kovalev-Ward 2 also...Ward lands three punches below the belt to "knock out" Kovalev and Weeks just calls it off like it was a legit knockout.
robprosser
Was that him in the Ward Kovalev fight? Dreadful refereeing (or blatantly corrupt). Edited June 4, 2023 by robprosser

One of the more disgraceful ref jobs ever, which is REALLY saying something. Weeks also reffed Broner-Porter, (2015) letting Broner hold & blatantly foul for 12 rounds, with not a single point deduction.
