Khan title defence to be in Newcastle

Amir Khan will make the first defence of his world title against Dmitriy Salita at the Metro Radio Arena in Newcastle on Saturday December 5.

Khan, who won the WBA light-welterweight belt in July by outpointing Andreas Kotelnik, faces a tricky first defence.

Promoter Frank Warren said: "For Amir's first defence this is a very tough fight for him and he's taking on a fighter that the American media are really building up at the moment.

"Salita's got a great record, he's unbeaten and carries a big punch and of course he will pose a threat to Amir, but Amir's a world-class fighter and has to deal with these challengers."

He added: "I've promoted a lot of shows in Newcastle with all the big names like Naz (Naseem Hamed), (Joe) Calzaghe, (Ricky) Hatton and (Nigel) Benn and I'm delighted to bring Amir to the city for the first time.

"The public there are big sports fans and love the big events and it's great to bring them a fight like Khan v Salita."

Salita, the mandatory challenger for Khan's title, was born in Odessa, Ukraine, and moved with his family to Brooklyn, New York, when he was nine years old. He is an observant Jew and strictly follows Jewish law so if he fights on a Saturday then it must begin after sundown, the end of the sabbath.

He famously said: "Anyone who wants a good whuppin' from me is just going to have to wait until sundown."

Khan gets a bad reception down our way because basicly he's been a bigmouth. Saying he would help Manny win (Jeez he didnt need it) against Hatton wasnt the cleverest of things to say, considering he's one of the best supported boxers if not the best of my lifetime. The MEN was like Hattons stomping ground before he moved onto the bright lights of Vegas.

That coupled with the facts a lot of Khan supporters are complete idiots, and im not trying to put the anti-asian slant on things its just the way it is. A load of young Asian lads who know nowt about boxing mixed in with a load of Drunken White lads who again no very little about boxing and it turns into an ugly affair with booing and racist remarks flying left right and centre. Ive never been to any fight in Britain or abroad where at large proportion of the crowd (if the not the majority at the MAB fight) were so anti the home fighter.

I wont be going to the Khan fight, ive been to a couple and didnt like the atmosphere and besides im more interested in the Williams fight which ill be hoping to catch later on. I will be interested to see on TV or hear from anyone who goes how Khan is taken to up there..

The trouble is that he went from lad next door...to lad knocking pedestrians down and lad that talks big!!

If he had kept his modesty, I think the fanbase he would've had, would have been huge...The lad has ability no doubt, but unless he finds the ability to absorb punches better his reign at the top will be short!!

Moving to Freddie was a masterstroke tho!

what people have got to remember is that khan is only a kid and kids run off at the mouth, come on, we were all young once, so i dont think he should be overly lambasted for what is essentially just a product of his youthful exuberance. i hope he beats salita and beats him good, the kid is good for british boxing and a pretty good figure for kids to look up to
