David Haye will postpone retirement for Vitali fight

British heavyweight David Haye has said he will delay retirement plans if he is given a rematch against either world champion Wladimir Klitschko or the chance to fight WBC belt-holder Vitali Klitschko.

Haye had planned to retire before his 31st birthday in October, but having lost his WBA title to Wladimir on a unanimous decision in Hamburg in July, the British fighter will delay hanging up his gloves if he can face either sibling.

Vitali defends his WBC title against Tomasz Adamek in Poland on Saturday, while Wladimir, the IBF, WBA, IBO and WBO champion, has said he expects to fight again in December, but no opponent has been confirmed yet.

“If I am given a rematch against Wladimir– which I do not believe I will – or Vitali will fight me, I will postpone my retirement for six months,” Haye told German daily Bild.

Haye said his decision to delay his plans was influenced by family and advice from Britain's former heavyweight world champion Lennox Lewis, who earned a sixth-round technical knock-out against Vitali Klistchko eight years ago.

“I've reconsidered everything after talking to my family and meeting with Lennox Lewis in Montego Bay, Jamaica,” said Haye.

“We chilled out there and Lennox gave me some tips on how to beat Vitali, just like he did in 2003.”

Haye said he will be watching Vitali fight Adamek on television and is hoping the 40-year-old champion keeps his title.

“I will keep my fingers crossed Klitschko wins, something I wouldn't normally do to save my life,” said Haye.

“I want him to clean up this Polish plum Adamek and retain his title, so that he will fight me.

“Wladimir couldn't put me down and he had the referee, judges and fans on his side. I had no real chance.

“Vitali should give me the chance, if he dares.

“He is supposed to have a dangerous punch, which I doubt.”

Haye resorted to trash-talking Wladimir in the build up to July's unification bout and Vitali has said he wants to fight the brash Brit to knock him out.

Having also blamed his defeat to Wladimir on a broken toe, Haye said he is is ready to fight again.

“Yeah, man - my broken toe is okay again,” said Haye.

“Vitali is 40 and will stop at some point.

“For his finale, there is no better opponent than me.

“And I would send him into retirement, but without his championship belt.”

This is quite annoying. I'm happy he's decided to carry on if there is truth in this article, and i am happy that he'll choose to fight Vitali if given the option.

What's annoying is that he's continuing to talk shite. After the whole Wlad episode you'd think he'd have learnt to just shut his trap. He's just setting himself up for another huge fall, obviously he wasn't embarassed after the whole Hamburg showing.

He wasd probably embarrassed, but 20 million earned from those of you who believed the bullshit will have made him get over it pretty quickly. He's never been able to make his mind up - previously he said he wouldn;t fightVitali. "Got no beef with Vitali" was his ludicrous way of putting it.

I thought he may have retired - but then made a 'come back'. I suppose he went against his word when he went into the ring with Wlad - and managed to get a good spanking, so I'm not surprised he is delaying the retirement he always championed.

The really annoying thing is that Haye could have made more of the fit with Wlad, but he didn't.

It any fight does come off, I'm going to try my best to resist being swept up in the hype (hmmm Haye - hype - only one letter different!!).

OMG Haye has lied again...why do people actually take this joke seriously?

Just speculation, I would love to see Vitali vs Haye, always thought Haye could beat Vitali, even now.

On what performance has Haye ever looked capable to genuinely mix with a top heavyweight? When he ran from Valuev? When he got dropped by Barrett? When he rabbit punched the crap out of Ruiz? When he bored us to sleep against Dancing Audley?...

Haye will not take a fight with Vitali. He would get pulverised. Even though Vitali is far too cautious, especially considering he has so much power and possibly the toughest chin in boxing, he would be FAR too good for Haye. I would give Haye at best 0.1% chance of winning against Vitali (i gave Adamek 1% chance). The ONLY way i see Haye accepting the fight is: MONEY. He'll take the money, get punched a bit (while running) and then retire with all his cash. I suggest nobody buys the fight, nobody takes him seriously and hopefully he just leaves boxing.

The proverbial Boy that Cried Wolf can yell all he wants, nobody is listening anymore. Haye can talk about how big the Wlad fight was, but the old adage is "fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me". NOBODY expects him to give an honest effort the second time around, NOBODY!!!! If you want to hang around and EARN ONE, that's fine, if not then quit teasing us with your retirement talk and go ahead and shove off, your wasting my time!
