Ricky Burns moving to lightweight....

I'd fucking love Katsidis to get a shot at a world title against Burns. Katsidis is a guy who has avoided nobody in his career and given the fans 10 out of 10 for entertainment value in every fight. It'd be a massive injustice to him if he retired having never won a world title, he should get the fight with Burns because he'd beat him, nobody deserves it more than Mick.

He has been WBO interim champion...which is seemingly what this fight will be for anyway.

Certainly one of the most fun to watch fighters in recent times.

If he moves up and challenges Katsidis or Mitchell within 2/3 fights then he deserves some credit as there above Broner in class.

Mitchell's not proven himself to be world-class anymore than Broner has, and at least Broner is still undefeated and has beaten Litzau and Ponce.

It'll be a Mitchell fight though - probably for some vacant WBO strap, and then some more pathetic defences before he has to fight as live opponent and suddenly decides he can't make lightweight either.

he just looks like a bit of a chump now, dodging the broner fight.

I don't think we can slag him just yet for the Broner fight, If he moves up and challenges Katsidis or Mitchell within 2/3 fights then he deserves some credit as there above Broner in class.

if he does move up to lightweight and takes on serious foes, then of course we can forgive the broner fight. but given his title defenses and his sudden weight problem....i think he's ducking the kid

Burns has said live lots he wants these kinds of fights, more Warren is ducking them.

He is ultimately the one in charge of his career, it's the Joe Calzaghe thing all over again, he can say "I'm taking this fight, i want to keep my title" or he can tow the company line

When your a fighter the promoter holds the contract, might be wrong but wasn't there rumour's Mitchell might not fight again unless he took on Murray under Warren? Promoter's hold the power unless you have a good contract with them, I doubt Ricky has as he wasn't a name or that popular in Scotland when he signed with Warren.

You are a champion, you say "Fuck Warren I'll make my mandatory, if I win (and I'm so confident after all) GBP will snap me up for beating their prospect live on HBO and I'll end up with a stateside presence". It's not like Broner is a voluntary defence that he's chosen to take (a la Murray v Mitchell being one that the fighters agreed to with out a commission pushing them together).

Heck I'm sure any Scottish promoter would jump on a world champion on a fight by fight basis, Matchroom seem happy to snap up fighters...

I think Burns' management might have realised that Broner is more of a threat than they originally thought. If so, then that's pretty naive of them. If Burns' team really do think he's struggling to make 130lbs then why not take the money from a Broner fight and then move up to 135? Win, lose or draw he's moving up in weight anyway. He can always say: "I lost because i couldn't make weight". He'd only be the 5000th boxer to use that excuse anyway. If the fight has been signed though and they pull out then that is unprofessional.

I thought the fight with Broner was great for Broner but ridiculous for Burns. For Broner it was a chance to beat perhaps the number one boxer at 130lbs and win his first World title. But for Burns it was a case of fighting the new kid on the block who has no name, no accompanying title, no money.... It's the sort of fight like Barrera vs Pacquiao I. The champion accepting a fight against a guy who is much better than his prospect status would suggest. Super featherweight isn't the most glamourous of divisions right now but i'm sure Burns could make more money from fighting someone like Fana for the Ring title, followed by a defence of that title and then a fight against the elite in the division.
