Wheelchair
At the official weigh-in for Saturday’s showdown against former world champion Daniel Ponce de Leon, ARENA’s Cuban featherweight superstar Yuriorkis Gamboa had to get rid off his underwear in order to make the contractual weight of 127 lbs. The Mexican weighed in exactly in the limit as well. For promoter Ahmet Oner this was another sign that his fighter will not remain at 126 but move up in weight to do his next fights at 130 or 135. “Yuri has emphasized a couple of times in the last days that this is his last fight close to the featherweight limit”, says Oner. “And I think we all agree that there’s nothing left to prove for him at 126. He beat everybody who dared to fight him so it’s the natural next step to fight his way through the next higher divisions.” While co-promoter Top Rank tried to draw the public attention to a possible fight between Gamboa and bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire who plans to move up to 126 sooner or later, “El Ciclon” is eyeing a megafight with another Filipino. “I would love to get a shot at Manny Pacquiao”, Gamboa said before the weigh-in. “I always said that I want to prove that I’m the best boxer in the world. To be the best you have to beat the best so I hope that at some point I get the chance to do that. I think a fight against Pacquiao at 140 could be fantastic.” “I think Gamboa is one of very few fighters who can be a real threat to Pacquiao”, adds promoter Oner. “Wouldn’t it be great to see these to aggressive fighting machines going at each other with their unique combination of extraordinary speed and power?” But Gamboa knows that he has to take care of Ponce de Leon first before he can phantasize about bigger things to come. Although “El Ciclon” has faced strong opponents from his first pro-fight on, the Mexican power puncher is surely the Cuban’s toughest test so far. “I know that I have to be careful because Ponce de Leon hits very hard”, says Gamboa. “But I hit hard as well and he cannot hit what he won’t even see. I will be way too fast for him and overwhelm him with my speed. Still I have to be cautious but I’m very well prepared for this fight.” http://www.fightnews.com/Boxing/gamboa-is-eyeing-pacquiao-94993#more-94993
RAZZ-MCFC
This would be a great fight but i just don't see Pacquiao ever fighting lower that 147 again in his career, so it seems more of a fantasy match up than anything. Gamboa would be a massive test for Pacquiao, definitely has a chance of winning in my opinion.

Better not mention fantasy matches Razz! mlol/ mlol/ I think Gamboa has a massive chance of a win if he can get the fight made. Manny is definitely slowing down and a young, quick fighter that packs power like Gamboa could definitely do some damage. I'm not saying he would win but he'd have a better chance than most Manny's faced in recent years.
londoner
Gamboa is fighting at 126lbs and Pacquiao at 147lbs. Even if Gamboa weighs in at 140lbs come fight night, this is a lose-lose situation for Pacquiao. If he blasts him out of there in 2 rounds, "he beat a featherweight", if he goes the distance "he couldn't even KO a featherweight". This fight has waste of time written all over it for Pacquiao. Gamboa is the only one with anything to win in this.

Does anyone think the guy they saw earlier tonight against Ponce De Leon would EVER be competitive four weight classes higher??? Talk like this is what gets guys hurt. There's a whole slew of fighters between Gamboa to Welterweight that I'd RATHER see him fight, only person I know that would want Pac-Gamboa is Bob Arum. Yeah he didn't knock him out and yes he didn't attempt to knock him out, but he would have achieved absolutely zilch by blowing him away. At least by taking him in to the later rounds he got the chance to hone his skills and sharpen up that defence. He even said in the interview that was his plan, you could tell he wasn't bothered about going for the stoppage anyway as he was only punching in ones and twos. A nice, tidy performance i thought where he won virtually every round. I'm happy with that.
Wheelchair
I wasn't over impressed by Gamboa last night, but maybe he was fighting to the level of his opponent, knowing that he couldn't be hurt. He's certainly not top 5 P4P calibre anytime soon.

He's certainly not top 5 P4P calibre anytime soon. He didn't fight how he normally does. He even said in the interview he was just happy to get rounds under his belt and not got for the knockout. He normally fights in bursts and flurrys, but last night he was only limiting himself to ones and twos. There's no point going all out when he can just as easily win a wide UD and get some experience under his belt in the process, while he's fighting a comfortable opponent. There'll be time for action and a higher standard of performance when he steps up the opposition next time out.

More wishful thinking? How is that wishful thinking? You've got this image of me as a hater, I don't know whether you genuinely think I am or whether that's just what you expect me to be? But i'm not. I just think in his last fight or so he hasn't shown as much hand speed as he has in the past, if only a fraction, to me it looks like he's slowing with age. I may be wrong but it's just a general opinion.

With the exception of Mosley, Pac's been as fast as ever.

WelshDevilRob
Can't see this fight happening anytime soon. Gamboa was 138lbs in the ring for the DeLeon fight. Plenty of other fights out there.
