As the Star Power Pay-Per-View draws closer we sat down with former IBF Flyweight and WBO Super Bantamweight Champion Duke McKenzie to discuss the upcoming fights, continuing with the WBC Light Middleweight fight between Canelo Alvarez and Alfonso Gomez.

Here’s what Duke had to say;

“Mexico over the years just doesn’t produce bad fighters. From Julio Cesar Chavez, who is probably the most legendary, De La Hoya, Barrera, Morales, I could go on and they now have Alvarez. Just look at what he’s done recently to Matthew Hatton and Ryan Rhodes. He has now come to the fore of his division as an outstanding champion. You can argue he may not have deserved his title opportunity but when given the chance he stepped up to the plate.”

“I would put money on this kid reigning for quite a while, he’s an untapped diamond. De La Hoya won’t put his name, promotion and brand to a kid who can’t fight. When you have a promotion like that behind you it makes you 20% better than you already are. You get right promotion, right type of fights, right grooming and they talk about him being the next superstar. In this case that’s not spin, De La Hoya is backing him for a reason and they can see the longevity in him.”

“Gomez is a total mismatch for Alvarez in my book. Gomez is here because he’s popular, having been on ‘The Contender’, and he’ll sell a lot of ticket. But in my opinion he doesn’t belong in the same arena as Alvarez. He’s been around the block for a while now and still there is nothing he can bring to the fight that Alvarez hasn’t already seen.”
