If Burns-Broner folds, Perez not the proxy

Mark Ortega, lead writer, leave-it-in-the-ring.com

In a piece by RingTV.com's Lem Satterfield today, it was reported that reigning WBO super featherweight champion Ricky Burns is having trouble coming down to the 130 pound limit and is being advised by his team to relinquish his title and move up to 135 pounds rather than fight Adrien Broner on HBO in the undefeated fighter's hometown of Cincinnati later this year.

The piece quoted Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaeffer as saying he talked to the WBO and was told if Burns is stripped, a fight between Broner and Golden Boy stablemate and fellow undefeated charge Eloy Perez would be sanctioned for the vacant title.

“Here's the problem. There's no way we can fight November 26th because my sister is getting married, so that is out of the question. If they were to make that fight in neutral ground, Vegas or California, something like that, we would take it down the road,” said Perez trainer and co-manager Sam Garcia to Leave It In The Ring over the phone today.

It's a clever tactic to move Burns up. Warren knew Broner was too much for him and wants to make more money from Burns by giving him another title. Boxing's quite sad today.

Well it would be a clever tactic but the lightweight division has everybody in it:

Marquez has the WBO and WBA

Guerrero and Rios are interim

Miggy Vazquez(thank you Scott) is IBF champ

Now OK, the WBC is vacant, but you've got Gamboa, Linares, Katsidis, Soto and Kevin Mitchell all in the mix. Mitchell is the obvious choice but doesn't yield a proper title. Burns would be better at superfeather trying to run the division.

Gamboa?

He's well out of the picture for now, he's still fighting at feather.

He's third in the WBC lightweight rankings so I assumed he must have stated his intention tio jump up ?//

Strange. His next fight is at feather, Boxrec still have him ranked number 2 at feather and he's still chasing a fight with Chris John so not sure where that's come from.

well i hear if he knocks out ponce this weekend he'll win the vacant WBC lightweight belt!

I think you're having a laugh but if not then it's madness. They're both featherweights and the fight is at the featherweight limit.

yes i was having a laugh, but forgot to add my favorite mlol/

gamboa hasn't yet stated any real intention to go up to lightweight. but even if he had, how the hell could he immediately be number 3!?!?!?

i'm starting to think that the sanctioning bodies just do this to see if people read their rankings

I love Gamboa, i have no doubts that he could be a world champion if he went to 135, but the simple fact is, he isn't yet. He's stated his plans to move up in the future but only after he's cleaned up at feather, which still means taking on Chris John and Juanma, regardless of whether or not Salido already beat him.

From BBC Sport.......

Scotland's WBO super-featherweight champion Ricky Burns may be about to relinquish his title.

The 28-year-old is in discussions about moving up to lightweight and fighting for a second world crown.

It had been reported that Burns was to make his fourth title defence in the United States against mandatory challenger Adrien Broner in November.

But Burns' manager Alex Morrison says nothing has been signed and that his fighter may instead give up the belt.

"My worry is Ricky making the weight," explained Morrison.

"It gets more difficult for fighters to keep making the 9st, 4lbs mark as they get older. Ricky is now 28 and it was always the plan for him to move up to lightweight."

Fighting at lightweight would see Burns, from Coatbridge, enter the ring five pounds heavier.

And Morrison believes his fighter wants to avoid the problems that other Scottish world champions have had with weight.

"Look at Alex Arthur and the problems he had with making his mark," he added.

"It was a big factor in Scott Harrison's downfall too. I've spoken to [promoter Frank] Warren about my concerns and he agrees with me. Money isn't everything"

On the subject of a proposed defence of Burns' WBO belt in Cincinnati at the end of November, Morrison said: "Nothing is signed or sealed but I am advising him against the fight.

"Ricky is on the verge of taking my advice and saying no. I would like him to relinquish the (super-featherweight) belt and move up to win a second world title."

Morrison insisted that Burns would fight again this year regardless of whether or not he moved up a division.

Frank not interested in money? I had to laugh. warren// would sell his own Grandma for a torn fiver.

In all the interviews I've heard from Ricky over the years I cant recall one saying he struggled to make the weight or wanted to move up. Ricky is an ambitous fighter, he may not have the skill to succeed but he has the heart and determination to atleast try, if i was Ricky I'd at least have aword with his promoter and manager as he was so determined to reign in his division and unify it as well as trying to earn the ring magazine belt as well.
