Dazn won't approve Canelo-Yildrim for WBC super middleweight title

This shitshow pretty much sums up the state of boxing doesn't it?

The champion losses his title for a second time, this time on the scales coming in overweight. He claims he needs to improve on his diet, that he isn't campaigning below where he needs to be, but that scenario is one of boxing poor points. The fact he previously lost the title due to a drug charge, is again representive of the sport. Be it drug test failures for PEDs or just illegal party drugs.

The WBC - Showcasing the inept rankings these alphabet bodies come up with, a shambles and no sensical system. How do they place Avni Yildrim as their number 1 contender? A fighter who stepped up twice to face anything like a contender and was promptly knocked out by Chris Eubank Jr and lost a technical decision to Anthony Dirrell (who they have down at number 5 on their rankings). While at number two they have a Malaysian fighter with 13 professional bouts (https://boxrec.com/en/proboxer/760564). Figure that one out. Their shameless love-in for Canelo is perfectly on show here also.

The Golden Boy - Canelo, possibly the sports poster boy at the moment and one of, if not the very highest earner when he fights. Sees and opportunity and pounces. It's probably unfair to really blame him. He sees an easy opportunity to pick up another title and make some money, that he really isn't in need of, along the way. Given that 4 of his last 5 fights have been against Golovkin x2, Jacobs and Kovalev it's understanding and he can be forgiven for seeking a seemingly easy victim. But this examplifies how boxers of today have opportunities to take advantage of the poor ABC bodies rankings and multitude of titles available.

The Broadcaster - Broadcasters have wielded a lot of power since the days of PPV, but has any of them ever refused to fights before? They usually allow and trust the promoter to put the fights together. But lets not pretend that DAZN wants to uphold the integrity of the sport here. It's all about money and business. Their aggressive rise over the past few years was never going to be sustained and they need to manage the coffers now.

Whether they have promised Canelo a specific guaranteed amount for every bout, I don't know, but if that IS the case then of course they need to have him in with good opponents that people want to see and pay for.

Portion the blame out as you see fit. I see a lot of criticism of Canelo on this, but surely anyone can see exactly the allure for him to take this opportunity handed to him?

--- Not really news anymore is it?

Dazn rumored on life support and Canelo acquiring another belt would seem to fit their long term plans. Why go after a Big Fight that could get canceled by a positive Corona test?

Even though we've all already been exposed and mostly remain asymptomatic?

Its a global meltdown. We can't blame boxing for that.
