'Beyond disgusting' - This man must not be allowed to fight

Jermain Taylor has no business fighting for the IBF middleweight championship at the Beau Rivage Resort & Casino, but not for the reason that most think.

Taylor, 36, briefly stepped away from boxing after getting pummeled by Arthur Abraham in his opening bout of the Super Six super middleweight tournament on Oct. 17, 2009, in

Germany. That fight was the second straight loss by knockout for Taylor, who'd been stopped by Carl Froch in the 12th round of a super middleweight title bout on April 25, 2009.

Many begged Taylor to retire out of concern for his health after the violent loss to Abraham. He appeared to be slurring his words and didn't seem like he could take a punch any more.

His promoter, Lou DiBella, urged him to walk away and said in 2009 he couldn't support Taylor if Taylor fought again. Like many fighters, though, Taylor couldn't walk away.

A little more than two years later, he came back to stop lightly regarded Jessie Nicklow on Dec. 30, 2011.

As much as those who saw Taylor at his peak and those who cared for him didn't want to see him back, he was within his rights to do what he did. He had been fully cleared medically by doctors at both the Mayo Clinic and the Cleveland Clinic. Neither set of physicians saw a reason why Taylor shouldn't be licensed to fight.

However, there are still two major reasons why Wednesday's fight with champion Sam Soliman, which will be broadcast on ESPN2, shouldn't be happening. The first is simply that he doesn't deserve to be fighting for a title.

No argument can reasonably be made that Taylor in any way earned the title shot. He's getting it because of the connections of his powerful manager, Al Haymon, and because he has name recognition that may help sell tickets in Mississippi and bring viewers to the ESPN2 broadcast.

Then the argument that he should be prevented from fighting is a stupid one.

That's one reason, not two. Does this bod know what he's doing?

As to railing against undeserved title shots, where has he been? I get tired of complaining about fighters getting title shots they don't deserve, from Morales and Mayweather through Lomachenko and Inoue.

With so many belts available over the last 10 years or so years there have been to many fighters that didn't deserve their title shots to remember . Taylor is just another one but as said his name may help ticket sales , it's still sad though

Wait...Inoue had beaten Taguchi who was pretty decently ranked and went the semi-traditional way of winning national title then regional/continental. He was fast tracked but had done more than many other title challengers down there.

Alright, perhaps I'm being a little unfair picking on Inoue, but you know my feelings about fighters getting title shots almost as soon as they turn pro - it should be difficult to become a world champion and it should be the reward at the end of a fairly long road, not something you get 18 months after you turn pro.

The JBC have a domestic rule where by you MUST have won the Japanese or OPBF title before being allowed to win a title at home. Japanese fighters who haven't done that have to fight on the road (Atsushi Kakutani and Tomoki Kameda both did that, with mixed result)

That may be so, but then if you can get a national title inside two fights, it still makes it rather easy.

No one has ever done that. The record is 4 fights.

Most Japanese champions in the lower weights are in the world rankings anyway (I..e Yu Kimura, Go Odaira, Suguru Muranaka, Sho Ishida, Masuda, Satoshi Hosono) in the higher weights no one moves that quickly anyway

Taylor won. A true indictor of how easy it is to win a World title.

--- If Popkorns is allowed to fight for titles after too many of the most disgraceful episodes of quitting and crying in the ring that I have ever witnessed, Taylor is certainly more deserving.

Bonus is that he already whooped Popkorns twice to drive him permanently from the middle division.
