According to World Boxing Council President Mauricio Sulaiman, his organization is investigating the ongoing situation with WBC light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson and his lack of mandatory defenses.

At the moment, Eleider Alvarez has been the mandatory challenger, for two years, to Stevenson's title.

Stevenson (29-1, 24 KOs) and Alvarez (23-0, 11 KOs) are both advised by Al Haymon and promoted by Yvon Michel of GYM - but for one reason or another a deal has never come together for them to fight each other.

Alvarez has been the mandatory challenger to Stevenson since his victory over Isaac Chilemba in November 2015 in Quebec City. The champion has not faced a mandatory challenger since he knocked out Tony Bellew in November 2013 in Quebec City. He has made six defenses of his title since.

Because of the circumstances, the WBC has taken a lot of heat from the media and fans, and Sulaiman has finally responded to the criticism.

"We are addressing this matter. It's not 4 years [since Stevenson made a mandatory] and Kovalev hurt the process as well but it's unacceptable to continue. WBC is ruling soon," stated Sulaiman.

Re: WBC Investigating Adonis Stevenson and Lack of Mandatories

This is a problem with the manager and promoter controlling both fighters. Alvarez is steady getting older - you'd think they'd at least try and get him ranked No.1 with someone else. Stevenson just happy being inactive. Both men could be involved in good fights, in this division, but they all seem happy in Canada.

I've touched on this issue before about the ABC bodies' motivations for ranking fighters.

They dont rank the champions of other orgs, and I think they try their best to actually have their own unique top 10-15, rather than actually rating the boxers in terms of their actual ability.

It's why we get really poor mandatory fighters, because the shitter that ABC ranks at number 3 is actually probably the 35th "best" boxer of the division. Its just that this body doesn't want to rank 30 of the better fighters because they are already ranked in their rival's listings.

There must be some monetary reasoning for this as to the explanation, obviously.

Makes a mockery of sport really.

well Kovalev didn't help the situation when Duva pulled out of purse bids, cant see why you would ask to become mandatory getting the spot then thinking 'oh i forgot purse bids are involved' give Adonis a free run for a while then, the WBC really need to sort this mess out though

That looked bad, I admit. - But knowing a bit about both Duva and Haymon, you have to figure there was something fishy happening on the Stevenson side of things.

- Especially at this point in time, looking back on Superman's "illustrious" career of the last few years.

Re: WBC Investigating Adonis Stevenson and Lack of Mandatories

The WBC has just allowed Stevenson to pay Eleider Alvarez step-aside money. It clears the way for Adonis to fight Badou Jack. Alvarez will fight for the interim title against Oleksandr Gvozdyk.

Makes a farce of the WBC investigating. On the plus side, Stevenson vs Jack and Alvarez vs Gvozdyk are two damn good match-ups.
