Danger Lurks in Hull

http://ringnews24.com/media/k2/items/cache/ee57fa5d70c19e66c7eabe3a49dadbcb_S.jpg

"I am not going to change too much, I'm going to go out and put on a show and I am not going to take a backward step—Tommy Boom Boom Coyle “I’m here to prove that I still have plenty left to offer – and there will be no questioning my future after Hull,” Michael Katsidis.*Michael “The Great” Katsidis (30-6) came back after 2 years and MRI CAT SCAN results (that he had scarring of the brain) to stop Eddy Comaro in March 2014. Then he battered and bloodied Graham “The Duke of” Earl (26-5) from pillar to post on his way to a lopsided UD in Toowoomba, Australia. The scores were 120-108, 120-109, and 119-109 as Katsidis claimed the vacant WBF belt (German version). Earl came out of a five year retirement to take this bout and surprised many by going the route without being decked but he offered little while taking a pounding against the relentless Aussie .

Post Fight Chaos, Vido, and One Dirty Mosquito

http://ringnews24.com/media/k2/items/cache/cf17341b702059ab06b70436477b0abb_S.jpg

Post Fight Chaos, Vido, and One Dirty Mosquito*“…The people at ringside could not accept the loss. There were people there from the Argentinian truckers union, where Lazarte is a member and they started to throw bottles and chairs. They entered the ring and attacked us. My friend, Oswaldo Bravo had to pull Casimero out from the mob and hide him under the ring,”—Promoter Sammy Gello “Lazarte v Casimero {was} for the IBF Junior Flyweight title in Buenos Aires on the 10/02/2012. A fight that had everything: weak refereeing, biting, rabbit punches, low blows, phantom knockdowns, and a nasty riot at the end. No boxer in his right mind would want to fight in Argentina now”—Poster named Gyalist.

Javier Fortuna beats Cotto in Foul Fest

http://ringnews24.com/media/k2/items/cache/538add22094c781c0ab1e2996cf1849d_S.jpg

Fortuna’s fight with Abner Cotto was sloppy, comical and ugly--–if it’s possible to be both ugly and comical at the same time. The horrific performance from referee Lou Hall, who was officiating his first significant career fight, only added to the mayhem, chaos, and havoc. Fortuna (26-0-1) buzzed Cotto (18-3) early in the first and second rounds, but Cotto hung in and even scored a “knockdown” in round two with two of the neatest back of the head rabbit punches ever thrown. Hall called it a knockdown which it was not and then took a point away from Cotto for the knockdown. Huh!

Blood Sport Time Redux

http://ringnews24.com/media/k2/items/cache/72af40fd19d246cc2f3c6f1b6d5b1ea1_S.jpg

On May 7, 2005, Jose Luis Castillo and the late Diego Corrales engaged in one of the most savage and thrilling fights ever waged inside a boxing ring. The stoppage by Diego remains one of the most dramatic ring turnarounds in history, perhaps matched only by Jorge Castro’s stoppage of John David Jackson via La mano de Dios (The hand of God) in 1996. Castillo (66-12-1), after knocking out Corrales in their rematch five months later, moved up to light welterweight and was promptly waxed by Ricky Hatton in 2007. After quitting on his stool against Alfonso Gomez in 2010, the proud and once feared Castillo announced his retirement, but like most boxers who announce a retirement on the spot and/or without exploring other options, this one didn’t last long.

O’Sullivan almost KO’d by Thrown Stool

http://ringnews24.com/media/k2/items/cache/c5ab99bdcebe5f31e1bcecf6a2839034_S.jpg

Middleweight Gary “Spike” O’Sullivan (18-1) took less than ninety seconds to wax opponent Anthony “Fitzey” Fitzgerald (16-6) in Dublin, Ireland on Saturday, but the knockout was not the only story in this one shown on Sky Sports. As O’Sullivan was celebrating his spectacular KO, someone displeased with the result tossed the corner stool across the ring, directly at Gary barley missing him.

Zou Shiming (5-0) vs. Kwanpichit 13 Rien Express (27-0-2)

http://ringnews24.com/media/k2/items/cache/983cbceacd34ac953405f88d55af0f37_S.jpg

This is an easy one. No way will the 5’41/2 Shiming lose to the 5’2’ 33 yea-old Thai with the puffed-up record a glance at which reveals that his level of opposition has been dreadful and includes twelve fights with opponents who were making their pro debut and even one of those ended in a draw. While “13 Rein” holds the WBO Oriental flyweight title, it means little in the scheme of things. On paper this a step up. In reality it’s a sideway move and may result in Zou getting his second stoppage win and it’s his first 12-rounder to boot. Shiming has great speed and possesses super technical skills. Billed as being China's most successful amateur boxer of all time, he won three consecutive Olympic medals and like Vasyl Lomachenko, is light years more seasoned than his record indicates. More specifically, he is a two-time Olympic gold medalist and three-time World Amateur Champion.

A New P4P List as Pac-Man Moves Up

http://ringnews24.com/media/k2/items/cache/4b205cae685d71e8cbd233878480b787_S.jpg

There is no such thing as a “correct” list. Attempts can be made to validate by quantification, but in the end, the subjective nature of any list comparing fighters across different weight categories will be the subject of heated debate and a magnet for many incoming arrows (or worse). These days, most of the same names appear on each list. With the advantage of compiling mine after the Pacquiao- Algieri beatdown on November 22, 2014 and keeping in mind that a PFP should reflect a current snapshot in time (thus eliminating Hopkins based on his loss to Kovalev and Andre Ward because of his inactivity), here is my list as of November 24, 2014: In compiling it, I carefully weighted and analyzed records, style, chin, KO percentages, skill-sets, quality of opposition, and especially dominance.A Pound for Pound List as of 11/24/14.

Malignaggi Slams Pacquiao

http://ringnews24.com/media/k2/items/cache/bcba153739ac0375612e201c2f8ce8f6_S.jpg

I feel I beat Manny Pacquiao—MalignaggiIn a report today on another boxing site, Fighter/Showtime analyst Paul Malignaggi talked about Paquiao vs. Mayweather. Said the Brooklyn motor mouth:"The Pacquiao people are so adamant about [Mayweather’s demands] because they know they won’t win the fight, and it won’t be competitive….Manny is the B side in the equation, and thus has no standing to call any negotiation shots.”

Andy Lee brings his Own Judges to Las Vegas

http://ringnews24.com/media/k2/items/cache/ee326afe1cdfac43aeacde839c4d21cd_S.jpg

I got there before he did—Andy LeeIn a night when a gifted boxer by the name of Mauricio Herrera was appallingly robbed in plain sight for the second time this year, and when some strange scoring resulted in a draw between Argentinian Diego Chavez and Timothy Bradley, “Iris” Andy Lee brought his own judges to the fight and took it out of the hands of the consistently awful Las Vegas Judges.

My Top Boxing Awards for 2014

http://ringnews24.com/media/k2/items/cache/4b54ee9bbdd5c474660426ad7e962f35_S.jpg

Fight of the Year: Salido-Kokietgym.Guerro-Kamega, Coyle-Brizuela, Molina-Matthysse, Rodriguez-Nakagama, and Stevens-Johnson were truly great fights, but Orlando Salido’s win over Thai Terdsak “Pit Bull “Kokietgym gets my nod. Salido (42-12-2) rose from knockdowns in the first, second and fifth rounds on the way to an 11th-round technical knockout of the tough “Pit Bull” (53-5-1) on September 18. Kokietgym was dropped in the first, fourth, seventh and final rounds, the last time for good as referee Eddie Claudio waved an end to the back-and-forth thriller at the 16-second mark.

Here Come the Japanese

http://ringnews24.com/media/k2/items/cache/f97e9134301a4793ce33fef00fef724c_S.jpg

Argentina has had its surge and it’s not over yet. Eastern Europe fighters continue to amaze as Golovkin, Kovalev, Klitschko, Lomachenko, Provodnikov, Gradovich and now Beterbiev make great fights in different global locales.Japan has been no stranger to boxing. With a thriving boxing scene and savvy fandom, many of boxing’s premier smaller fighters are Japanese, albeit largely below the featherweight threshold. And this holds true for the past as well. Warriors like Yoshio Shirai, Masahiko “Fighting” Harada, Yoko Gushiken, Masamori Tokuyama Masao Ohba, Jiro Watanabe, Guts Ishimatsu, the Kobayashi brothers (Hiroshi and Royal), and Shinji Takehara quickly come to mind. In fact some have recently been inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame.
