Re: General Boxing (worth mentioning, not thread worthy)

Kamagai has fought in the US before. He's big, strong, rugged and hard hitting... But very basic, slow, poor footwork. A sharp Guerrero schools him but having been out of the ring for a while this looks like it COULD be competitive.

--- Be a better fight in each other's styles than Lomachenko vs Russell is.

I expect Russell to be running around like a chicken with his head cut off. The only questions are if Loma can catch him, and if he can't, who wins the decision? Russell and most esp Guerrero are the home fighters and most of the boxing community is against Loma exposing the cracks in their so called elite fighters.

Brian ‘The Lion’ Rose (25-1-1) weighed in at 10st 13lbs 6oz for his world title challenge to undefeated WBO light middleweight champion Demetrius 'Boo Boo' Andrade (20-0), who was a tad closer to the 11 stone limit at 10st 13lbs 12oz.

Re: General Boxing (worth mentioning, not thread worthy)

On this day, 30 years ago 1984-06-15:

I today present a video of Thomas Hearns vs Roberto Duran. At Caesars Palace, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA, for Hearns' WBC JMW title. In 38 fights Duran had never been KO'd and had only ever been on his arse twice. Duran was coming off a loss to Marvin Hagler in a 15 round war for Hagler's WBC, WBA and IBF MW straps. Duran felt he would be more comfortable at JMW and stepped down.

The hype surrounding the fight was that Hearns thought the "indestructible" inside fighter Duran was vulnerable in the early rounds. The smart money had tagged onto a claim that in reality, Hearns was nursing a damaged hand and needed it over smartish. The commentators casually said "I think we are in for a couple of explosive rounds in rounds 1 and 2". Never in history were such casual words destined to become true as this event unfolded.

Hearns enters the ring to Bill Conti's "Gonna Fly Now"............if you've never seen it before have a look.

I think Algieri gives Provodnikov issues for a few rounds but comes undone in the middle of the bout. Chris is a decent boxer but I think he's perhaps a level behind Provonikov. Tidy fighter though.

--- Haven't yet caught the fight, but here we go again with the usual moving the goalposts of boxing with hometown boy Algieri copping a split decision.

The fight that could have easily been stopped in the first round after Provo blasted his eye shut in the first round with two knockdowns, the first being a highlight reel KD. Other than the scoring mess where Provo won his card wide to Algieri's two close cards, the fight itself looks to be a stylistic classic.

Scorecard here:

Re: General Boxing (worth mentioning, not thread worthy)

The eye wasn't even close to be shut in the opening round, it did get progressively shut through the fight but he protected it pretty well considering there was swelling from round 1.

--- Margarito's eye was in better shape in the 9th round of his Cotto rematch than Algieri's was at the end of the first round of Provo.

Difference was Marg was coming on strong in the later rounds just like he was the first Cotto fight where he brutalized Cotto for the stoppage. The NY commish can't have that be happening to their top money fighters and pulled the plug on poor Marg. I applaud Algieri for showing uncommon grit and discipline to carry on a good fight, but if boxing officials that oversee all of boxing were judged on the same Rube Goldberg sliding scales they use for fighters, they would be lucky to compile 0.500 mark journeyman records.

At least we got a game popcorn fisted fighter added into the welter mix for the short duration his career lasts.

I dare suggest you see an optician. They weren't even comparable. Algieri had a bit of swelling at the bottom of the eye, Margarito, who had eye problems going in, was looking like a disfigured gargoyle. I understand the confusion where Texan women do tend to have that look about them.

That was about as bad asit got in the opening round.

Yup, 74 seconds left in the round and he hardly took another clean head shot in the rest of it. Feel free to actually WATCH THE FUCKING FIGHT before commenting, or...be just like Boz and decide the winner and loser on what the fighter said after the fight. Lets not forget the Freddie Roach even said "it was close" in the corner.

But any, yeah Ruslan was obviously robbed, the fight should have been stopped after less than 2 minutes because Algieri was a little bruised.

Sadly Ruslan, for all his skill however couldn't land on a guy fighting with 1 eye for, what you claim, was 11 rounds. That surely tells you all you need to know about Ruslan, or, of course, Algieri wasn't fighting with 1 eye...

--- I watched and commented on the first round condition of the eye, something you failed to do or understand. He was "knocked down" twice in the round and was lucky to escape the stoppage as he could scarcely dent your mess of overcooked haggis as Provo's easily busted up face shows here:

Bob Arum KO'd....................!

Injured fighters having surgery? That’s nothing new. But what about promoters?

On Tuesday in Phoenix, Top Rank promoter Bob Arum will have surgery on his bum right knee -- “It’s been bone on bone and it’s killin’ me,” he said -- when he undergoes a right knee replacement.

The surgery and ensuing rehabilitation means Arum will be off the road for the time being after a long stretch of travel that included fights in Macau and New York, where he hobbled around because of the bad knee.

Arum said he won’t be able to make it to Omaha, Nebraska, for lightweight titlist Terence Crawford’s hometown defense against Yuriorkis Gamboa on June 28. But he hopes to be able to resume his normal schedule in time to travel to Top Rank’s next show in Macau, which is scheduled for July 19 with flyweight Zou Shiming in the main event and junior featherweight titlist Guillermo Rigondeaux making a defense.

Arum said he will be in the hospital for about three days and then will begin his rehab in Phoenix before going to his second home in Los Angeles to continue with his physical therapy.

“I’ll do most of the rehab in L.A. and hopefully I will be well enough to travel to the Macau fight. How could I miss Rigondeaux?” Arum said with a laugh.

Algieri vs Provodnikov ratings a hit..............

Chris Algieri's stirring and controversial split-decision victory against Ruslan Provodnikov on Saturday night at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, drew a strong audience, perhaps making it more likely we will see a rematch later this year.

According to Nielsen Media Research, the bout was the third-most viewed on cable so far in 2014. The live, first-time airing averaged 1.046 million viewers to HBO, ranking only behind two other HBO-televised fights, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.-Bryan Vera II and Juan Manuel Marquez-Mike Alvarado. Algieri-Provodnikov peaked at 1.110 million viewers.

The top seven cable fights in 2014 have all been on HBO.

Provodnikov and his trainer, Hall of Famer Freddie Roach, both said after the fight that they are interested in a rematch of a fight that many thought Provodnikov (who scored two knockdowns in the first round and badly damaged Algieri's right eye) won.

Artie Pelullo told ESPN.com that there is a rematch clause in the contract that is at his "sole discretion" and that he and Provodnikov will talk about what they want to do. Based on the viewership figures and the bout's entertainment value, HBO figures to be interested.

The overall HBO telecast averaged 954,000 viewers, making it the network's most-watched edition of "Boxing After Dark" so far this year.

Demetrius Andrade's seventh-round knockout of Brian Rose to retain a junior middleweight title averaged 882,000 viewers.

The telecast opened with a replay of the previous week's Miguel Cotto-Sergio Martinez middleweight championship fight on HBO PPV. The replay averaged 970,000 viewers and peaked at 1.126 million.

GBP vs TR War in Full Thaw.................

http://www.goldenboypromotions.com/userfiles/images/GBP%20Logo(1).png

Although it came together thanks to a purse bid, Saturday's Gary Russell Jr.-Vasyl Lomachenko bout could go down as the beginning of a new relationship between promoters Golden Boy and Top Rank. Now that Golden Boy promoter Oscar De La Hoya and Top Rank boss Bob Arum are cozy again, and both say that they are willing to do business with each other, it seems as though this particular boxing cold war is over.

A lot of interesting fights are probably still off the table if adviser Al Haymon, whose relationship with Arum has been in the toilet for years, is involved -- but whatever fighters are under contract to Golden Boy can probably be matched now with Top Rank if it makes sense.

A few months before De La Hoya and Arum made peace, Golden Boy won a purse bid for the vacant featherweight title bout between Garry Russell Jr. (a Haymon fighter, by the way) and Vasyl Lomachenko, the two-time Olympic gold medalist with Arum.

The purse bid paved the way for Golden Boy to take control of the fight, which is part of a Showtime tripleheader Saturday night (10 ET), without having to involve Top Rank. But maybe now that De La Hoya and Arum are on good terms more fights like this can happen in the future, especially now that Richard Schaefer, who opposed working with Top Rank, has resigned as Golden Boy CEO.

Now, keep in mind, Arum and Haymon aren't about to begin matching their fighters together, so a lot of good fights are clearly still off the table. But, hey, this is a start.

Russell said he was glad that his fight with Lomachenko, although done under a purse bid, has helped break the ice.

"Honestly, it's a big honor to break the cycle of the Al Haymon and Bob Arum/Top Rank and Golden Boy dissent, because I think you have these great fighters on both sides of the fence that the fans would love to see," he said. "Now it's a possibility to fulfill them or give them a possibility to see it.

"I think it's a big breakthrough for me and Lomachenko to be able to be one of the first to actually do it, and hopefully this will open the door for a lot of the other fights that the fans would want to see take place."

Golden Boy did not have to involve Top Rank in the promotion at all and Lomachenko could have refused to participate in any way. But both camps have done their part, making it a seemingly friendly, drama-free promotion.

Moretti said a lot of the cold war stuff is overblown.

"I think that's what the media and social media likes to jump on but, you know, at the end of the day, I just can't see in the middle of the sixth round guys rooting for Al or Bob," Moretti said. "It's a fight, and the fight Lomachenko has to worry about is Gary Russell and Gary Russell has got to worry about Lomachenko, and anything other than that is just Twitter talk, which people seem to love lately."

De La Hoya has been saying for weeks -- since his meeting of the minds with Arum -- that he wants to promote fights with any promoter that can help him make the biggest bouts for his fighters.

"I think it's wonderful to hear from a fighter like Gary Russell that he wants to engage in these big, major fights, regardless of promoters," De La Hoya said. "That's what it's really all about. It's not about promoters and egos. It's about the fighters and the fans. So, I'm optimistic that in the near future the fight fans will get what they deserve."

Dawson Misses Weight and looks shite.....................

http://www.gubta.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/Bqmaj8jCUAE4XNI.jpg-large.0_standard_400.0.jpeg

Bad Chad is looking a little like Sad Chad, as the the former light heavyweight champ was in superficially sorry shape at today’s weigh-in.

Chad Dawson makes his return to the ring tomorrow night with a fight on Showtime Extreme, going on ahead of the main card tripleheader on Showtime, and today he weighed in at just under 183 pounds for a tune-up fight against veteran club fighter George Blades.

To say that Dawson (31-3, 17 KO) wasn’t exactly looking in great shape is an understatement:

Compared to the chiseled physique Dawson used to sport as a light heavyweight, this is a world of difference. Fighters always say they’re in the best shape of their career, no matter what. I’m pretty sure Dawson can’t claim that one going into tomorrow’s fight.

Will Dawson, who turns 32 next month, get back to the top of the heap? Obviously, this is not the most serious fight in the world, and it’s just getting him back in action. But even considering that, he looks very weak compared to his normal self. If this is how he’s approaching his comeback, expectations probably took a hit today.

Frank Warren: Price won't be facing winner of Chisora-Fury

http://ringnews24.com/media/k2/items/cache/759c10e441069f463d01544369840dba_S.jpg

Liverpool's David Price will not be in the running to fight the winner out of premier heavyweights Dereck Chisora and Tyson Fury said promoter Frank Warren.Price's promoter Kalle Sauerland had said that it was 'inevitable' that Price would face the winner of Chisora and Fury, but Warren has said that won't happen.Bitter rivals Chisora and Fury clash in the biggest domestic heavyweight showdown in recent years at the Phones 4 U Arena in Manchester on Saturday 26th July, with the winner securing the WBO number one spot to challenge reigning world champion Wladimir Klitschko.

The Canelo/Lara undercard is already miserable at best, but this his newest promotion. Quote "We are thrilled to be able to bring such a stacked card –Oscar De La Hoya"

The card: Danny “Swift” Garcia (28-0, 16 KOs) vs “Lightning” Rod Salka (19-3, 3 KOs), Lamont Peterson (32-2-1, 16 KOs) vs Edgar “El Chamaco” Santana (29-4, 20 KOs), and Daniel “Miracle Man” Jacobs (27-1, 24 KOs) vs Jarrod “Left Jab” Fletcher (18-1, 10 KOs)

Martinez Alcides-Does he deserve his shot?

After the recent topic about Vasyl Lomachenko I'd wondering what people think of this weekend's WBC Minimumweight challenger Alcides Martinez (12-2-8-1, 6).

Martinez, from Nicaragua, is the WBC #13 and IBF #14 ranked challenger. He has, to date, never fought in a bout scheduled for more than 8 rounds, in his 3 8 rounders he has gone 1-1-1 and his most notable opponent to date is Dirceu Cabarca, a former WBC Light Flyweight title challenger, who beat Martinez via majority decison in one of those aforementioned 8 rounders.

If it pleases you to know Thailand's unbeaten Wanheng Menayothin has been the #1 ranked challenger since late last year. He is the mandatory challenger and is expected to face the winner later this year.

And yes, his record is not a typo, he really does have 8 draws from 23 fights!

Alcides Martinez: This is the chap thats had 3 draws with Roger Collado and 2 draws and a NC with Byron Rojas...................?!

But this is the WBC Scott, so the only acceptance criterion for a title shot is the size of Sulaiman Jr's brown envelope casually "left" in his hotel room....................
