:tsk: And I was foolish enough to think this guy is something more than a crude hitter. Now lets bring on Huck-Hernandez!:boxing: Forget that old dog Arslan, its just a waste of time for Marco Muamer!

Re: Russian Cruiserweights- will they ever...

I think the thread title makes a good point, that Russian Cruisers tend to fall short when they get to the top of the pyramid.

Lebedev and Drozd then? Lebedev just got cut up too badly against Jones, otherwise it was a close fight. Drozd stopped unbeaten and highly rated Masternak.:ranger:

It was the performance against the "other" Jones (as in Roy) where Lebedev didn't impress me, having to score a late KO to avoid getting decisioned by a shot ex-champ that others were handling with ease.

Re: Russian Cruiserweights- will they ever...

...live up to expectation?

--- Will writers and fans ever live to see the day when they can actually give credit due when after great fight was waged?

Alekseev was stopped, sat upon by the ref as he attempted to rise, so mistake number one in that fight, but why no controversial stoppage outrage when Alekseev gave a much tougher battle than did Groves or Rios? Answer is easy, Alekseev was already seen as damaged goods falling short of his potential coming into the fight. Westerners are heavily biased against former Soviet peoples, esp Russians, more to the point, especially "no good bums" who made the mistake of lacing up the gloves to show some promise before losing a fight or two against top comp.

Alekseev clearly stunned Hern briefly in the 9th, but the fight was already running on fumes because of the efforts of both fighters and couldn't jump him before he recovered. Alekseev was clearly stalking Hern about the ring in the final stanzas, looking and delivering some big shots. Hern managed to finally pull it out with a great right hook that most anyone would catch late in a grueling fight and go down. That Alek was not given a chance to rise shows the bias of the ref protecting the money fighter Hern for Saurland, but then since boxing is so pathetically officiated and organized anyway, and since there has been a sudden rash of brain injuries, the refs can now claim protecting the fighter down as a reason for the stoppage.

This fight was better and toughter fought than Marquez/Casamayer that was a low activity counter/counter punching bore, but Casa got stopped by being sat on by the ref just like Alek was for the money fighter in Marquez who had recently signed with GB and was looking for big fights he got with Floydy and the Pac rematches. Good call by the ref to further along the cash cow, and at very least the last couple of rounds were waged at a very high level by the fighters with little intervention by the ref. Overall, my impressions are fighters get more money and better, more level officiating in Germany than they get in US/UK that have sunk pitifully in reputation.

--- Castillo had been KOed twice and otherwise handled by much lower Mexican fighters coming into the first Floydy fight.

Come on, LRR. The Julio Alvarez fight was FOUR YEARS before he fought Floyd, and Javier Jauregui and Cesar Soto held World Titles and were NOT simply "lower Mexican fighters" as you describe them.

--- They were much lower than Floydy who was ironically being touted as the "next Roy Jones" around that time if you want to understand the legacy of Jones who's decline has been overdramatized. He's still a reasonably good fighter, just not a contender. Russians started with Mr. Field when they started passing him around, they're instructed to not go hard after him so they can bring him back for more easy Russian promotions.

Valuev practically fainted he was so terrified when he landed a wide, wild left hook on Mr. Field that could have been the one that finished him. Field would have missed it but for stepping into the shot. Nobody wants to be the one that permanently brain damages these faded legends. Jones and Field had done nothing to warrant a title shot, but these poor Russians are told what to do or else they won't been at the top of any card any more.
