Is Usyk a danger to Joshua/Wilder?

Oleksandr Usyk emerged a serious danger to world heavyweight titleholders Anthony Joshua and Deontay Wilder on Saturday.

The Ukrainian unanimously outpointed Murat Gassiev to become undisputed world cruiserweight champion after delivering a boxing masterclass that set alarm bells ringing for the elite heavyweights.

If Usyk (15-0, 11 KOs) was a wolf in sheep's clothing stalking from the outside before Saturday, he is now a real threat for the heavyweight champions and contenders.

Moments after defeating Russian big-hitter Gassiev for the WBC, WBA, IBF and WBO world cruiserweight titles in the World Boxing Super Series (WBSS) final, television pundits and social media were calling for Usyk to step up a division.

--- Ok, just finished the fight and had it 119-109 for Usyk.

No 10-8 rds and only 1 rd for Gassiev, but I can see how cable got irritated as did Gassiev, it was like trying to swat a swarm of tiny hornets for him.

dont see Usyk as. Danger to Josh, but yeah , he could frustrate Deyonce into a DQ. Usyk beats Bellew easy.

best part of the fight when he got clocked and slumped, but immediately ducked under the wild follow up to spin Gassiev, sticking his leg out to put him off balance, great survival instincts.

He's a threat but not a huge one. His speed and movement could frustrate both but against Grassiev he was fighting a shorter man. Both AJ and Deontay are a lot bigger and he'd have to negotiate 12 rounds without getting nailed and I just don't see him doing that. I think his best chance is against Wilder as eventually Joshua would walk him down. While he has the skill to outbox Wilder, Deontay would basically have to land one clean punch and it's over. His right hands are difficult to anticipate - they can come from any direction.

What a ridiculous question.

1. he hasnt said he's moving up to HW and throwing 4 belts down the toilet yet

2. he isn't a natural HW - AJ and Deyonce are

3. at CW hes KO'd one person in his last 6 fights - so cant dig

4. Gassiev rocked him and he doesnt like being hit - so if a CW can rock him hows he going to cope with a slotter from AJ ?

Hes a damn good CW but lets not get carried away here on a tide of Euro-level boxing from last Saturday.

I think this is it! It's been repeated over the years hasn't it. As soon as someone stands out in the cruiserweight division, the glamour, prestige and money / interest of fighting in the heavy division becomes a thing the boxer craves, and fight fans wonder how they'd fair in the big mans game.

The difficultly of the cruiserweight to heavyweight transition should not be underrated. Sure a few cruiserweights have come up and beaten the cream of the heavyweight division. But most have failed the transition. Some dismally.

Yeah, with many top HW today weighing around 240-250, that's quite a jump.

They really should change the upper limit for CW, and then also for LHW.

Of course, the WBA will probably just make a Super HW belt.

It wouldn't be just one super heavyweight belt the WBA would create either. There would be 3 or 4, and then all the other organisations would add their 3 or 4 and the population of boxing world title holders would grow by another quantum amount.

To be fair they did change the cruiser limit. It went from 190lbs to 200lbs in the early 2000s. The problem is this helps small heavyweights but it makes the jump from light heavy awfully big and any rising of the cruiser limit will only increase that. Maybe a super light heavy division at 190, cruiser at 210, heavy 210 to 230 and super heavy 230+?:haha:
