The_budweiser
Nearly three years on, Floyd Mayweather v Pacquiao still leaves a bitter taste in people’s mouths after the fight failed to catch alight and give us something that stood out to remember it for. Instead, it resulted in a clear points win for ‘Money’ which left no doubt that the long awaited welterweight battle was over-cooked in terms of promotion and duration. Hopefully a huge lesson was learned, both by the fans and those in power to make these fights happen, but this is not something new! We can go far back in time, decades ago, and rumbles will be found involving one, or or even two combatants whose glory days had long past them by. 10 Major Fights That Happened Too Late And What Would Have Took Place Had They Unfolded At The Right Time! - - Boxing News - Ring News24

Ton
Re: Fights That Happened Too Late - whats yours? RJJ vs Hopkins 2? Calzaghe vs the two above also. **Edit** just seen the article. I was thinking Lennox vs Tyson also. Wasn't Khan - Barrera more a case of them meeting at the opposite end of their careers? Rather than it being spoken of for years. LondonRingRules
Re: Fights That Happened Too Late - whats yours? --- Exactly. Khan and Barrera weight classes barely overlapped. Manny/ TUE was first floated when Manny was a feather and TUE was a LW, but back then Manny was busy with the 3 Amigos and "experts" thought the jump up impossible for Manny. Im thinking Tyson/Field before mike went to prison. He hadn't fully melted down and his idiot trainers figured out Tyson couldn't fight on his psycho meds after the Douglas result. He was dangerously manic in the Ruddock pressers, but at least he was better trained and ready to fight. Field had struggled with a shot dokes and would have met the same fate as Ruddock who was beat to hell in those fights. King had control over both and needed Field as champ, hence he getting the Douglas shot instead of Tyson.

Yes. He faced Holyfield when he was 42. (And still only lost by a few rounds.) - Another fight that happened way too late.
pittbox
Re: Fights That Happened Too Late - whats yours? I remember that there was a lot of hype when James Toney came back to cruiserweight division to take on Denis Lebedev. "Lights Out" still had no embarissing loses at this time and Russians made a big effort to hype up the fight. In the end it was a one-sided clear sweep win for Lebedev and the end of a serious career for Toney.
