Re: Roman Boxing Gloves Found

--- Typical knucklenoggin' Beeb nonsense, the reason why their boxing forum went belly up when the idjits proved incapable of managing it.

They ain't gloves by any measure of definition, but more aptly described as protective sparring knuckle mufflers. Nice find I do suppose, but there are much greater treasures to be unearthed.

The archaeologist running the site described them as gloves, so it's not just the BBC. Vindolanda has chucked out some amazing finds recently, including wax tablets with the writing intact. Roman archaeology is generally looked down upon in the profession because there's so much of it and it's often more of the same, but there have been some delightful surprises in recent years.

--- Archaeologists are on par with the poor history of the beeb as regards boxing once they got out of it.

They could also be regarded as knuckledusters if filled with a heavy, viscous liquid that is allowed to dry in a sort of a mold as the article notes the gloves possess. Glad to read about such a pleasant find, but their conclusions are dubious...
