There's a tradition in Japan of boxing events being held around New Year's Eve. This year we get two shows, wich is less than typical three of four. We're going to witness five championship fights on both events combined.

30th December, Yokohama

WBC light flyweight: Ken Shiro v Gilberto Pedroza

Japanese champ who won two close decisions against top Mexican contenders in 2017 takes on Gilberto Pedroza from Panama whose best win is the SD against Mexican Saul Juarez.

WBO super flyweight: Naoya Inoue v Yoan Boyeaux

One of the most popular Japanese boxers fights French contender, who has not fought anyone woth of note since 2013.

31th December, Tokyo

IBF minimumweight : Hiroto Kyoguchi v Carlos Buitgrato

Japanese wonderkind takes on quality contender Carlos Buitgrato from Nicaragua in his first defense of IBF belt.

WBO flyweight: Sho Kimura v Toshiyuki Igarashi

Kimura who surprisingly defeated Zou Shiming squares off against ex light flyweight WBC champ.

IBF/WBA light flyweight: Ryoichi Taguchi v Milan Melindo

It's time for icing on the cake, unification bout! Very hard to say who is the favorite here.

I think it'd be worth to look at those events during dull period on rings of USA and Europe. I like matchmaking of Tokyo event, not so much the Yokohama one.Unification bout shouldn't be overlooked!

Re: New Year's' Eve boxing in Japan.

There's only two shows as TV Tokyo have ducked out of boxing (following the retirement of Uchiyama), and Ioka's essentially retired,Tanaka is injured (although would have faced Taguchi if he was still fit). A bit of a mess but yay for two shows, the Monster's Super Flyweight send off, and Shimziu's first defense of the OPBF title.

Hopefully at Bantam the Monster may well fight someone decent.......

Re: New Year's' Eve boxing in Japan.

Hopefully they stop being pussies like Cuadras, Ancajas and Yafai were

"Oh noes, you need to pay us alot more to fight him, but our management won't make a counter offer because we're not stupid, we're just pussies"

he was never staying at super fly long, and Roman fucked the only fight the monster really wanted, onto bigger and better things at bantam...

Re: New Year's' Eve boxing in Japan.

Fights of Inoue and Shiro ended with expected clear wins by local favorites.

Hiroto Kyoguchi impressingly beat Carlos Buitgrato and his promoters should try to make him fight Niyomtrong or Moonsri in a potential unfification.

Kimura v Igarashi turned out suprprisingly one-sided with a clear win by the champ.

Ryoichi Taguchi unificated WBA and IBF titles by beating Milan Melindo. Judges had it 2x117-111 and 116-111. I had it closer with 115-113 for Taguchi. Fight looked close up to 9th round, but Japanese fighter dominated last three rounds. It's a very impressive win for Taguchi as he wasn't a clear favorite in this bout.

Overall, it seems like Japanese boxing is getting better! They have a lot of great champs, such as Ryota Murata and Daigo Higa apart from those whom we saw last weekend.
