Luis Ortiz crushes Bryant Jennings

The 2015 boxing year culminated with a tremendous show at Turning Stone Resort Casino as WBA Interim Heavyweight Champion Luis “The Real King Kong” Ortiz (24-0, 21 KOs) closed the show by maintaining his title with a knockout-of-the-year candidate over Bryant “By – By” Jennings (19-2, 10 KOs) in the seventh round of their scheduled bout live on HBO Boxing After Dark.

“Today, there is a new era in the heavyweight division,” Ortiz, who landed a vicious uppercut to end the fight, said. “Jennings is fighter who deserves much respect, but he can tell you that I am a force in the heavyweight division. I am going to go out and obtain my objective. “I have been training for a big fight of this magnitude for three years. My strategy was to keep him at a distance and I was able to do that effectively with my reach and my jab. I will fight whoever next, whoever Golden Boy Promotions gives me I will take. Wilder, Fury, Klitschko anyone of them, I am ready to prove that I am the heavyweight world champion. A lot of people say a lot of things about me, but the testing showed that I am a clean fighter.”

“I wasn’t on my game, and he got the best of me,” Jennings said. “I didn’t adjust well and he was the better man.”

Re: Last night's HBO card: Jennings vs Ortiz

Boy HOWDY ! My boy really came through.

I've been upping Ortiz for quite a while, but no one seemed to pay any attention to the big, slick Cuban. Well, they're paying attention now!

What was especially good to see was that Ortiz kept his cool under fairly heavy pressure from Jennings. Normally, Ortiz fights in a fairly relaxed style, using clever footwork, head slips, and general ring smarts in combination with short-but-aggressive offensive flurries. This of course helps him conserve energy. I was afraid that if Jennings kept up a high pace, it would force Ortiz to also up his movement, and the old man might gass in the later rounds. - but Ortiz remained calm and in control.

This bodes well for his future. I can see him easily fighting in top form for at least another 2-3 years/ Certainly long enough to win a few belts.

Now the question is, will Fury, Wlad, or Wilder go anywhere near him?

He's a big lump - reminded me of an 80's Heavyweight i.e talent, skillset but not the engine to keep going. Jennings showed all his flaws against an out of shape Mike Perez. Just not the confidence there and we saw why against Ortiz. He's a tough guy to get past but not sure the genuine ones like Anthony Joshua will worry. The rest like Wilder, Fury will avoid him as he is more in their radar.

Anyone else get annoyed when Lederman phrases the boxing judges before the decision is announced? I love Harold, but I can do without that. Walters vs Sosa scorecards were a joke.

I've seen that mentioned on social media. I was posting the Ortiz vs Jennings video and then found the Walters fight but it was only from the 7th round - commentary and Lederman had a shut-out. But comments don't seem to add up. How did you score the fight, mate?

I stopped scoring after giving the first 8 rounds to Walters. Maybe one round earlier in the fight could've gone to Sosa. I'd say anyone that saw Sosa winning more than 2 rounds is either legally blind, need to get their eyes checked, or is an incompetent judge.

Re: Last night's HBO card: Jennings vs Ortiz

--- Let's not kid ourselves about Ortiz, a well deserved victory if no positive test follows, so he ain't out of the woods yet.

Hardly slick unless you count a slug's imitation of a moving, jabbing Ali slick. Jennings pretty much hit him everywhere at will and was ahead by Lederman and I also had him ahead by less, only a point with one round even. Ortiz always had a puncher's chance, so it's telling that Jennings refused to back off him save for a few times he did look a bit hurt. He obviously thought he could take Ortiz as much as he hit him, but his power wasn't there as we all knew in advance. Nonetheless, he was sharp enough to hold Ortiz at bay for significant times in the fight. He was more aggressive than against Wlad and paid for it. Hopefully he can come back. No shame about being KOed by Ortiz who has upped his ratings if he can sail by drug testing.

Now, Povetkin is more aggressive and credentialed than Jennings with more power and better chin. Let's see if Ortiz and clear that hurdle before we give him an actual title shot. He's beat Wilder though, close to guaranteed.
