Gamboa beats Salido to unify featherweight champion titles

One of the most discussed questions at Pearl Theatre at The Palms Casino Resorts in Las Vegas after Yuriorkis Gamboa’s impressive unanimous decision win over Mexico’s Orlando Salido had nothing to do with the scoring of the judges (116-109, 115-109, 114-109) but with Gamboa’s style. Fans and experts argued whether they had seen a "new Gamboa" (as HBO’s Max Kellermann supposed) or the "same old fighter" with the same old flaws and sometimes sloppy defense..

"I feel that I am developing and improving with every fight", says Gamboa. "My trainer Ismael Salas and I have been working on different things and we made certain adjustments to my style. I felt – like in all of my pro-fights so far – that I was always in charge of the action and the better man in the ring. I don’t care too much if I win on points or by knockout as long as I leave the ring as winner."

Fact is, 2,000 fans at Pearl Theatre got to see a worthy "Battle of the Champions" as Top Rank had billed the unification bout. Gamboa started as aggressive and offensive as always pressuring him opponent from the opening bell on. In the mid-rpunds Salido adjusted better to Gamboa’s style and fought back despite being hit by some hard shots and vicious combinations. The Cuban former amateur standout seemed impressed by Salido’s chin and the way the Mexican kept on going after him. Still Gamboa managed to adjust his game plan and change from unconditional to controlled offense.

In the 8th most spectators may have been reminded on the "old Gamboa" though when the Cuban slipped off-balance after missing a power shot which was ruled a knockdown by referee Joe Cortez. While "El Ciclon" has answered mistakes like that with immediate furious attacks in the past, in this fight he took two rounds until he he really hurt Salido with nice combinations and hard shots to the head.

In the 12th Gamboa finally floored Salido and was almost disqualified for punching after Salido went down for a second time in that round. Only Salido getting up from the canvas to continue fighting saved the Cuban from being disqualified.

"Salido proved to be a true gentleman", said Promoter Ahmet Öner. "I saw lots of guys taking advantage of similar situations forcing referees to wave off the fight. Salido showed a lot of heart and proved that he came to fight. This fight was another important experience for Gamboa on his way to the top of the world."

On his way all the way to the top, Gamboa may meet unbeaten WBO champion Juan Manuel Lopez sooner or later who watched the fight from ringside being invited by Top Rank and promoter Bob Arum.

"I have seen an excellent fight from both guys", commented JuanMa after the bout. "I congratulate Gamboa but I also saw some things I might be able to take advantage of in case we will fight soon. There are lots of excellent fighters out there at 126 at the moment with Gamboa, Chris Joihn and Celestino Caballero being three of the names I’m looking at."

First of all Lopez takes on Mexican ring legend Rafael Marquez in early November. „We’ll see where we go from there“, says Top Rank’s Bob Arum.

"I know that there is a lot of talk about me fighting JuanMa soon“, says Gamboa. "But it’s not my job to worry about that. I will leave this up to the promoters who want to put the fight together. I can only say that I am ready and up for the challenge. I want to prove that I am the best and to do so I have to beat everybody they put in front of him, no matter if his name is Salido, Rojas, John, Caballero or Lopez. Just bring 'em on!"

It was a good job Gamboa won or the unification would have been for nothing......

12 hours before his unification fight against WBA featherweight champ Yuriorkis Gamboa, IBF champ Orlando Salido was stripped of the belt for exceeding the IBF’s maximum 10 pound weight gain rule after an 8AM weigh-in. Salido, who weighed 126 at yesterday’s weigh-in, weighed 138. The rule is intended to prevent the fighters from risking their health due to rapid weight gain. As a result the WBA title is still up for grabs for both fighters, but only Gambaoa is eligible to win the IBF belt. If Salido wins, the IBF title will be vacant.

ugly fight, but good win for gamboa. salido was by far the best opponent hes fought (and is a little underrated IMO). gamboa is lucky he didn't get DQ'd when he hit salido when he was down.

didnt even know that salido has the weight issue, HBO didnt mention it at all.

i don't even get why he did that because he probably would of won with that combo, Salido didn't look like he wanted to get up and plus it gave him time to recover, if he would of made the count he would of been easy pickings for Gamboa to finish off

all in all though i'm very pleased with the performance, next opponent for Gamboa should be Chris John, definitely, if not John then he should fight Elio Rojas for the WBC belt, give him some more leverage over the big names

I'm glad the reaction on this forum is more realistic than some of the others that were more critical of Gamboa. HBO has the guy so pumped up hype-wise that there seems to be a lot of people disappointed in what, given Gamboa's experience-level thusfar, shouldn't be anything he should have apologize for. Salido hadn't been stopped in over 10 years, and he'd been in with Marquez and a lot of good fighters over that time. Gamboa still has some defensive issues, but anyone who though he was going to fold at the sign of adversity, or be taken out to the deep water and drown by a experience veteran when he wore down, I think they saw that it's not going to be that easy to do. I didn't like that nonsense punching to the back of the head long after Salido was already down, but by and large I thought it was a good performance.

great post Dave, the problem with everybody is they're expecting explosive performances from Gamboa every fight now and early stoppages but as the standard of opposition gets better that won't happen as much anymore, especially against opponents like Salido, Gamboa has proven in his last 2 fights that he's more than capable of digging into the trenches when he needs to and putting in a very good, technical performance for the full 12...people forget he's still improving as well

you only need to look at how quick he's become a world champion to see how good he is and how much talent is there, and in his next fight it's almost guaranteed he'll add another belt to his collection if he wins because it's either John, Rojas or Juanma, doubt it'll be Caballero, Bob's not gonna throw him in with Cab, not before Juanma anyway

Actually that'sd a fair point - I was guilty of thiking "Orlando Salido? that's a bit ordinary isn't it?" but I forget Gamboa's still fresh.

Thanks, Razz. Yeah, I have a bad feeling that Bob's going to steer both Gamboa and Lopez in somewhat easy waters from now on and focus on keeping both undefeated until they can meet in a big fight either late in 20012 or 2013. You know how Arum loves to let things simmer...........of course, in the meantime we end up with these guys not facing a Caballero during that time, so is it really worth the payoff at the end? Sometimes I wonder. Arum might be a Great Promoter, but in truth he "prevents" more fights than he actually puts on :(

just finished watching this fight, the first few rounds looked like a guy playing fight night throw 5 punches 2 yards away and adventully 1 will land mlol/ gamboa throws some nice power combos, but is really wild at times. not saw alot of him but thats 5 times now hes been down, is he chinny? salido lacked confidence i thought early on and was dipping his head low alot due to gambos combos , not wanting to get caught. spent more trying to make gamboa miss the first few rounds than hitting back. but he came on little stronger when he got the knockdown and grew in confidence nicking a odd round , not a bad fight at all. best man won in the end.

people do see him as chinny yeah but personally i think it's more to do with the him getting caught off balance when he's on 1 of his mad swinging combos

Razz-

I thought he got legitmately stung a few times, but I agree that a lot of the times he was wobbled it was more balance. I think it's just going to be a case where we have to get used to the occasional knockdown when your that wild.

that's the good thing though mate, both Gamboa and Juanma can be dropped and both are explosive so they both make for exciting match-ups no matter who they're against
